It's a simple question...

And it's the exact one that LSU head coach Matt McMahon was asked on Saturday during his postgame press conference.

Just a few hours before, the Tigers took to the court for the season finale vs. Texas A&M on Senior Day.

The Tigers led by a game-high 15 points in the first half, but ended up losing in triple overtime, 94-91. The loss dropped LSU to 15-16 overall and dead last in the SEC with a 3-15 conference record.

It was another tough loss and another ugly season. Which is why the question about his future was warranted.
quote:

"Coach, why do you feel like you should be able to return next season and continue coaching here?" Glenn Guilbeau asked.

"Thanks for the question, Glenn," McMahon responded. "For me, I’m 47, this is my 30th season in college basketball, so I’ve just been incredibly blessed. I have absolutely nothing but gratitude and appreciation for this opportunity."

"With that 30 years of experience, I also understand what comes with the job from an expectation standpoint, and I share in the disappointment and frustration that we haven’t gotten the results we wanted over the last two months. That’s my responsibility."

"With that said, I absolutely love LSU, and I love our core group returns next year. I think we have a great administration and leadership team here at LSU, so clearly, I'll respect whatever decisions they make moving forward. But I love the opportunity, and for me, I think it’s just critical that we keep our focus on preparing our players in our team and for the opportunity next week in Nashville at the SEC tournament."
LSU has gone 60-69 overall (17–55 in the SEC) over the last four seasons under McMahon's leadership.

If you were a player and looked at his record over his time here would you want to be developed by Matt? If I was the parent of a young basketball player I wouldn’t want my child to play for him because he has proven he can’t develop his players and team into a winner here.
The only way I would let my child come here is if I knew they weren’t good enough for a scholarship here and there alternative was some far less superior opportunity.

I would say a lot of players developed under him this year. Nwowko, Mckinnon and Reece have all gotten better this year especially Reece who had to take over at PG as a freshman, DJ Thomas had also improved from last year and who knows how far he could have gone without the injury. Player development was the least of their problems this year. Losing DJ and Reed was the biggest problem.

That was a pretty good answer to a question with no good answer for him. I hope LSU moves on. I hold no ill will toward Matt McMahon, he was in over his head. He needs to go back to a mid major somewhere.

It’s easy for people to call for his job when they aren’t the ones writing the check

What the hell else you expecting him to say. He has four years. Just does not fit at LSU. Time for a change.

It’s fake. He has a guaranteed contract, he’s hoping to get fired. Gets paid the same win or lose.

It’s just like any other coaching contract. It has a buyout. It is not the full amount of his remaining contract.

80% of the contract, he is supposed to look for work, and the buyout is mitigated by whatever salary he gets if he goes elsewhere.
