Texas High School Football Coach Arrested For Tossing Opposing Player Off Fight Pile
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
61-year-old Texas high school football coach David Donnell was arrested on September 7th during a game when his team, Sanderson, got into a brawl with their opponent and Donnell started throwing kids off the brawl pile...

Per Fox24...
quote:

In the video, Donnell is shown removing one Marfa football player from the group. Donnell is then seen grabbing another Marfa football player by the front of his jersey and pulling the 17-year-old to the ground.

After the fight was broken up, authorities on the scene went to both team’s camera operators to see if they recorded the alleged assault. The Sanderson camera operator had no footage; however, the Marfa operator had a clear shot of the assault.

Once they reviewed the video, Marfa authorities took Donnell into custody around 10:03 p.m.
Donnell is facing a Class A misdemeanor assault charge.

Assault? In full gear? I've seen harder "hits" in touch football games. So now a coach can't break up a fight by pulling players out the fray? Ridiculous.

Wouldnt the video prove the player had jumped on a pile to fight? How is that not assault? Lemme guess, the thug gets a pass for fighting while the coach gets arrested for throwing the thug off the pile.

why would an opposing coach not pull his own players out of 'said' pile? He didn't deserve charges, he deserved some knuckle justice

My coach would have gotten the death penalty these days for how brutal our practices were.

So, by breaking up a fight on the field you get arrested ! He pulled people off the pile ! He didn't beat or attack anyone ! What's up ?

That kid was subjected to FAR more violence on about 50 plays of that game.....and by fellow teenagers vs a 61 year old man. Plus, Texas law allows the use of reasonable force to defend a third person from violence and slinging a fully padded teen is not unreasonable. As a 21 year police veteran I'm calling not guilty, and I'm sure that any jury will see it that way as well. When you engage in a brawl, sometimes brawl things happen.
