Runners World- Participants in the 2026 Los Angeles Marathon have the option to only run 18 miles—and still receive a finisher medal, race officials announced this week.

Organizers are projecting a warm, sunny day across the point-to-point course from Dodger Stadium to Century City, with temperatures starting in the mid-50s around the 7:00 a.m. start and climbing into the mid-to-upper 70s by midday, with a high in the low 80s. In response, the McCourt Foundation, which organizes the race, says runners will have an additional choice on race day: marathoners who are “having a tough day” can take a turn at mile 18, head to the finish line early, and still collect a finisher medal.

If Pheidippides had taken the 18 mile opt out history would look a bit different today. Sparta never would have known that Athens needed their help. The Phoenicians would've easily defeated and conquered Athens. And I'd bet it was quite a bit warmer than 80degres. Heck, Pheidippides made the run then joined in the fight. What a trooper.

What?? A marathon is 26.2 miles. you either finish it or you don't. There's no excuses for the weather.

People should stand by the bailout turn with signs that say “QUITTERS” or “LESS THANS” with an arrow pointing to the shorter route. Inform runners along the bypass that 18 miles is not a full marathon. This is like the people who say they ran the Disney marathon but take a break every mile to wait in line and take a photo with a Disney character.

As much as I want to rip them for this, I don’t know for sure but if I had to guess…it’s for the fattys that say they’re gonna “run a marathon” but end up just walking the whole thing. So the people who put it on don’t wanna wait all freaking night and to the next day for the overweight people to walk the whole thing. Just so they can post a picture on social media saying “I did it!” I’d bet the legit runners will not be affected at all.
