The offensive efficiency thread below got me thinking about the defense. Obviously it's been a bit lackign this year and leaves a lot to be desired, especially compared (which isn't a good thing to do) to 2022 and 2021. I was actually shocked to see how they stacked up in conference. All ranks are within the SEC:

PPG - 1st (14 ppg)
Rush D- 1st (91 ypg)
Pass D- 1st (171 ypg)
Total D- 1st (262 ypg)
3rd down success - 1st (23%)
Interceptions- 1st (9)

Despite the major dropoff from years past, this defense is still leading the SEC in almost all major categories. Of course there are some issues.

Opp red zone conversions- 8th (87%)
Forced fumbles - 14th (1)
Sacks - 12th (12)

It looks like we get very little real pressure on the QB, but we do intercept a good bit and generally keep people out of our area. Once they do get into the red zone though they have a fair amount of success.

These are Willie Martinez 2008 level numbers.

So the defense isn't generational, it's just really damn good?

Apparently we have our lowest overall defensive efficiency number since 2016.

Would post the chart and write up from grahams site but I have somehow forgot or lost the ability to post pictures

Are these metrics opponent adjusted in any capacity? I've got a sour feeling we're about to get a dose of reality when our numbers aren't backed up by having played some pretty bad teams.

Kentucky was averaging 35 points a game until they scored 13 against us.
USC averages 26 points a game 14 against us
Vandy 26 a game and 20 vs us

If you go back, a lot of these scores were short fields off turnovers, which is not a huge overall issue, but one that needs to be cleaned up.

I am surprised at those numbers.

Georgia fans got spoiled. I admit it.

I was curious so I looked into it. Vs FBS and Conference opponents we are still overall #1 in conference for YPG allowed. Ranked teams is tough since we only played Kentucky who was probably overrated but we did outperform our averages. (Bonus: ONE SEC team hasn’t played a ranked, at time of game or otherwise, opponent… any guesses?)

I found it interesting when you factor non-conference games (normally cupcakes) our YPG allowed actually gets worse…

I guess you could really get in the weeds and start pointing out even our FBS/SEC opponents haven’t really been all that tough but I do like the progression that seems to be happening.

"Hey Carson, stop throwing the ball to the other team on our side of the field."

That should take care of it.

shite, the alleged generational QB at USC threw 3 picks against a very average Notre Dame team to the point where the coach sat him when the game was possibly out of reach.

Overall red zone percentage doesn't mean that much, IMO. Red zone touchdown percentage is a hugely telling stat.

73% ranks 119th in the country. This is probably the one big thing that has to get cleaned up at some point. It's not pretty on offense either (62%, 59th in the country).

I think Smart wants a TD, but will settle for a FG in a lot of games as opposed to going for it or making a chancy throw.
Also, we took a knee in the red zone at least once this season, but I feel it is more. I know we did against Vandy.

QB pressure leads to incompletions and interceptions. INTs lead to points.

Really 14 against our D for all intents & purposes.

That is a championship defense no matter what other numbers people throw out.

If the squad has solid production on offense, which they do, this is enough to win it all. Get in a full 4Qs, and the key will be capitalizing in the big moments.

Unfortunately the remaining games all feature offenses that are statistically better than any offenses we have faced to date. Even Tech is ranked higher than any of our past opponents. Unless we improve, which we should slightly as the season progresses, I don't think sustaining those numbers will be feasible.

I think you underestimate Kentucky's run game.

I did misread the piece from Emerson. Kentucky is 33rd in nation in yards per play.

Remaining on the schedule are Ole Miss (10th), Missouri (23rd), Georgia Tech (27th), Tennessee (38th) and Florida (43rd).

Tough stretch incoming.

Kentucky is #6 in the country in yards per rush.

Take out the UGA game and they would be #2 in the country.
