If tweet fails to load, click here. I'm a little shocked that this hasn't been brought up on here yet.
ETA - Finally saw the other thread. Agreed. Title sucks arse and OP should've felt bad for fumbling.

It was but the thread title sucked.
It's the congrats to JD thread.
I am pumped for Dantzler and glad the admin made the tough decision to fire howard. He ruined several big moments and sucked at describing the play and giving the yardage. Sounded like he was at the dentist at the spring game too. Whining online only reinforces the right decision was made

Given how many major calls we have had in the last 5 years that will forever be cemented in UGA football history, Chris Fowler's calls on ESPN of the Ringo pick 6 to seal the 2021 national championship game, the ad Mitchell touchdown in the peach bowl against Ohio State in 22, Ohio state's missed field goal in the same game, I can't tell you how Howard called any of those. I can hear Fowler's call in my head every time I think of those plays.
It always seemed to me that Scott Howard tried too hard to make everything a moment, and was unsuccessful in most attempts.

Totally agree. It's sad that we didn't have someone that could meet those moments with a worthy call. As you said, Fowler and even Ben Ingram have better calls in those moments than Howard.

The funny thing about lasting calls is in Indianapolis, when Kirby accepted the NC trophy and said man there will be some property destroyed tonight, the Indianapolis police did not get the joke and all the sky ways were closed for the walk to the hotel in 5 degree temps.

agree with all of this. Tried WAY too hard to shoehorn in some stupid arse phrases instead of just calling things with a natural flow like fowler.
I also didn't realize that he's been the main guy for 17 years. It sure doesn't feel like it's been that long.

Consider yourself lucky. Howard's call was awful. You couldn't tell if he was saying "no good" or "no, good" for about a minute.

Right he missed it is far more direct.

Never liked him for football from the jump.
Even before taking over for Larry, he would butcher Larry's calls by interjecting loud expressions during a TD or a big hit.
He had a bad habit of making up multiple stupid phrases (It's Chubby time!, for example)
He completely lost me after the retarded call of the Ohio St. missed field goal.
Absolutely terrible.

I never heard about that Indianapolis property destroyed joke he told. Crazy if true. Howard had a really tough job following Munson. He seemed better suited as the color analyst and I had to look back but he did that from 1993 to 2008. I had to look up who was Larry's color analyst before that - Ed Thilenius. I really don't remember his voice.
I had heard Dantzler was in the running to replace Munson but the off color comments he made on radio hurt his chances. Then later on he had a DUI arrest. I think I may have heard Buck Belue tossed his name in the hat as well. I've always liked Jeff. The post-game and call-in show he does with Bulter are good.
Side note, I thought Zeier was a great color analyst. I'm guessing he probably just stepped down due to time constraints. Last time i talked with him he had a a job with Bank of America.

Yeah, I think it's a difficult adjustment for people who grew up in the TV only age where everything is on tv.
I listen to sports on the radio all the time and get really annoyed that they don't realize people tune in and out, make it a point to tell us which way the team is going, what is the down and distance, if the wind is blowing, how much time is left etc... Reviews etc...
Many guys just think we are watching on TV or have been tuned in the entire time.
Paint a picture and over communicate what is actually happening in the game every single play.

Munson was great at painting the picture. I remember listening to the 1971 Auburn-GA game and Larry describing a Sullivan to Beasley touchdown pass to beat GA. It drew a picture in my mind. The next day saw the play on the Vince Dooley show and it was exactly as Munson described.

Howard does all the good stuff on the basketball broadcasts, but doesn't deliver the same detail on the football broadcasts.

We created an entire thread in your honor. Will your wife allow you to comment?

I know that call, now. Yeah. Terrible.
In the interest of piling on, I'll never forgive him for the "McConkey got on his donkey" call. Memorable for all the wrong reasons.

I have listened to almost all of Scott Howard's broadcasts and he is simply not as bad as some of you make him out to be. The true comparison should not be with national announcers like Fowler but with other team affiliated announcers. There are some really good ones but there are many who are much worse than Howard. All in all, I thought Scott did a good job especially considering he followed the best ever.
With that being said, I expect Dantzler to do a really good job and am looking forward to it.
PS To the poster above who mentioned Ed Thilenius. He was the play by play announcer before Munson and not his color guy.

As others have said - the job of the guy in the booth is to paint the picture for those who don't have eyes on the game.
Granted, there were times that Munson failed in that task. "Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott! Lindsay Scott!" may be iconic in Dawg history, but if you weren't watching that game along with him, you might not have had any idea as to what was going on. Did he get tackled? Did he fall down? Did he keep going through the endzone and ran to the nearest grocery store for bread?
The number one gripe I have is that when Howard was at his best, it was passable, but when he was bad, he was really bad. And he was quite bad quite often. If my only two recollections of calls are negative opinions (and I needed to be reminded of one of them), that's not a ringing endorsement of the man's tenure.
That said, it was nice to hear his call during the G-Day telecast, but ESPN fricked up the audio mix and the radio call was unintelligible at times.
