Yah, the soul has kind of been zapped. I just go to 1 or 2 games a year; like a mid-tier SEC game like Vandy or Kentucky. College football is like the NFL without a salary cap now.

I was there in 1989. Everyone was certain that the reason for the falloff after the Herschel years was because Vince and his staff weren’t putting the energy into recruiting. Goff had backing of influential booster group in Albany who vocally asked for Ray. We needed a young energetic recruiter who knows the Georgia people and the Georgia high school coaches.
During the Goff era, WayneMcDuffie was the de facto head coach in many ways.
man, some interesting information from way back. I think Dooley agreed with the decision because as someone said, it was similar young HC like he had been hired; a UGA guy, and a guy that could stay there for 30 years. Ray was a great recruiter - Zeier, Hastings, Hearst, Edwards, and Hines Ward. That's serious talent. I assume the Albany guys figured if Ray had a serous X and O guy like McDuffie he could make it work. The game had really passed Vince - real smart decision to step back and he was already AD.

I'm sure it's all about the $. UGA fans really have. good time in Nashville from our days playing Vandy every other year. I had a good time. The hotel rates are insane for those kind of game weekends. I remember the cheapest hotel was 400 in Nashville. We ended up staying in Murfreesboro.

Yah, interesting to look back. Dick Sheridan had won a NC af Furman. He had really turned NC State around. He was a great coach. He only staid at NC State 3 more years and then I think he went into real estate. I think he would have had a lot of success. It's suprising looking back that we only had one coach we targeted before going internally. My cousin and another friend were on the 79-81 team. They did not like Goff at all. Be interesting to know what the thought process was on that hire.

Though now that I think about it I think he was talking about Bulldawg Brunch on Sundays.
That's great. I guess he may not do the post-game show and just the brunch show, but he may do both. That's one of the best old school college football shows on the air.

Yeah this shite sucks man. At least we got two Natty's before they completely ruined it.
I've said it before but just rip the bandaid off at this point and make this version of "college football" a pro league, and set up a volunteer football team made of students that can play other, local universities at the club level and stream the games on YouTube. I would watch that over this bullshite at this point. Make them sign a waiver that they can split the YouTube money evenly to avoid this happening again I guess
yah, thanks the heavens we got 2 Natty's before the landscape changed. Kirby did a great job w/ the last 2 seasons winning the SEC but we didn't have the right mix to be successful in the playoffs. I'll be interested to see how Indiana does in the next few years - if they can repeat the formula that won it for them.
I don't think there's anything the SEC, NCAA, or Congress can do now the floodgates have been opened. It's basically a pro league now with open free agency.
I'm just going to try to enjoy the season and rivalry games.
re: Zach Branch Arrested Post GDay for two "Obstruction" charges..updated with police report

I think the silver lining of the arrest is that he dropped in the draft because of it and the Falcons were able to pick him up in the 3rd round. I thought he would have been a late first round or late 2nd round pick.

I doubt it would happen because there are so many SEC schools that care about basketball now, and the NCAA would just kick the SEC out of March Madness. Florida and Aubrn both get super gay for basketball. And then there's Kentucky that's always been about basketball and to a lesser extent Arkansas.
The NCAA would also kick the SEC out of the baseball World Series, and that'd piss a bunch of SEC people off too.
yah, I think Kirby and the SEC are just talking big. The NCAA would definitly kick us out of the college world series and basketball. They may try to come up with something where it's football only but just doesn't seem realistic for football only.

Horner was a great Brave. I was trying to remember if I saw him play for the Richmond Braves but when I looked it up; saw he skipped the minor leagues. I saw most of the early 80's Braves players coming through Richmond.
I also didn't remember he staid with the Braves through 1986. I know he switched to 1B after the Braves brought in Ken Oberkfell. Horner was never a great defensive player.
He had a lot of injury problems so likely why he retired early.

I'm kind of jaded on the whole thing too. I think a lot of people just want to enjoy the things about college football they grew up with - the rivalry, trailgate, tradition, friends, etc. I really like the regional rivalries and think that is what makes the game so special. Like the annual TN-GA game was great, but now it's 4 years or whatever. If they start doing something where you have to pay a subcription to watch - I am out - finished. I haven't watched a single Braves game since they require a subsription now.
I think the SEC break could work if they Big 10 is involved, but there will be so many people left out.

It could be a bluff but it could happen. I think the SEC and Big 10 may try to partner and split and come up with their own playoff. Would make sense if they both expand to 18 or more. Then it's like the NFL(AFC/NFC). They may as well assign each school as a AAA affiliate to an NFL team(just joking). Kirby has done a good job in this NIL era but he's obviously highly for regulating it. If the SEC/Big 10 merged into one league the group of five and ACC could have their own championship.
I would imagine the SEC tries to add Clemson and FSU. Maybe the Big 10 adds AZ and AZ state. There are still a lot of schools left out.

I'm not so sure. Bottoms didn't have a great run as mayor, but like the 2018 election there isn't a clear candidate for the Republicans and Kemp won a narrow victory over a weaker candidate(Abrams). I think main election may go to a runoff.

I remember when Schuerholz took over, the thing fans a lot of fans were most excited about was that he promised to have a better grounds crew. The Braves had a really shitty grounds crew before that, and the new crew would get a standing ovation sometimes after they dragged the infield.
And they also started playing Put Me In Coach when the team took the field. And then the team started winning and they'd draw 55,000 on a Wednesday night.
There will never be energy lke that around an Atlanta sports team ever again. It was lightning in a bottle, It's hard to appreciate if you're not old enough.
I was a huge Braves fan from the late 70's onwards. I grew up going to see the Richmond Braves and later moved down to SC. By the late 80's I was really burned out. I think it was the year Ted did that "One Crazy Summer" promotion and they lost over 100 games. I think it was maybe 1988. I was really skeptical in 91. I was at UGA and I remember going to the first Braves game I had been to in years right in the middle of the Fall division battle. I think at the time we were battling the Dodgers for the West division. The energy at Fulton County stadium was electirc.

yah, he was a great businessman. In this day and age where a lot of business leaders are only worried about shareholder value it's great to reflect on his legacy. His products brought a lot of enjoyment and value to people. The Braves were terrible most of his tenure but I and many people loved them.

Interesting thread. Agree w/ an early thread - I think Kemp is done. He's in his late 50's and can do pretty much whatever he wants - TV, think tank, consulting, speaking, golf, or whatever he wants. It wouldn't surprise me if he took some post at UGA like Sonny Perdue. I am hoping he takes some time off and then decides to run for President.
The Republican governor primary will likely go to a runoff with Jackson, Jones, and Raffensperger.

I'm on a FB group people say they don't like the Falcons because they never draft Dawgs lol. NFL teams draft out of need not to please local college fan bases.

Thanks for clearing that up. I asked Chatgpt and it was wrong. I asked it again and just said Scott Howard and that Loran Smith was his main on-air partner. I think in the 80's it was just Larry in the booth and he would frequently call down to Loran on the field; "Loran what ya got?"

Branch and Colbie were both game breakers. Gunner was throwing to him all the time when it was clutch time. The arrest definitely hurt his draft stock. Really hard to believe he was there in 3rd round. I get why NFL teams were nervous but that arrest was really minor.

I never heard about that Indianapolis property destroyed joke he told. Crazy if true. Howard had a really tough job following Munson. He seemed better suited as the color analyst and I had to look back but he did that from 1993 to 2008. I had to look up who was Larry's color analyst before that - Ed Thilenius. I really don't remember his voice.
I had heard Dantzler was in the running to replace Munson but the off color comments he made on radio hurt his chances. Then later on he had a DUI arrest. I think I may have heard Buck Belue tossed his name in the hat as well. I've always liked Jeff. The post-game and call-in show he does with Bulter are good.
Side note, I thought Zeier was a great color analyst. I'm guessing he probably just stepped down due to time constraints. Last time i talked with him he had a a job with Bank of America.

I would imagine Athens PD was charged up with G-day and Criterioum, but still they deal with these kind of crowds all the time with football games. I remember people used to bring kegs down to Criterium and wheel them around with dollys back in the 90's.
Seems like he could get the charges dropped but if a cop asks you to do something twice do it and go on with your evening.

Gunner should improve this year. Biggest thing I saw last year is he defaulted to his check down too much which was often a screen pass. I think it's tough for a QB like Gunner to transition to college. He was bigger and faster than everyone in AA HS ball. He doesn't have the speed to do what he did in HS so he has had to transition to more of.pocket passer. He's not scared to run but he probably being encouraged to do it less if he wants to go to the NFL. To me he's a lot like Fromm with a bit more speed and running power.
