Downtown Taco Stand, Gyro Wrap, and now The Varsity will have bit the dust in the last 365 days.

quote:

The owners of landmark fast-food restaurant The Varsity recently filed for a permit to tear down the 1965 restaurant to make way for what is likely to be apartments and retail, perhaps a grocery store.

Because the city of Athens sure doesn't have enough of those already...

I swear 20 years from now I'm gonna be downtown and look around and recognize literally nothing from my college days. I know times change and all but small southern college towns should look the part, it doesn't need to look like a soulless Atlantic station

Whoever downvoted the Gyro Wrap comment, you’re a cultureless heathen wandering through a desert of superficial placation masquerading as an identity. But you don’t need me to tell you that as deep down you know it to be true. Swine.

I'm pretty much already there.

Is the old Greyhound station a condo now?

Nah, it’s a seafood place from Alabama. Never been, heard it’s good

Nothing is safe from the corporate development overlords. This sucks.

I used to live behind it, all those neighborhoods along reed st have historic designation, I would imagine that includes the block the varsity is on, but maybe not. If so, then they will have a tough time getting much through the ACC commission.

Regarding Gyro, I thought I read they were planning on re-opening.

The downtown taco stand sucked. Milledge was better. And would sell PBR to-go on Sundays before it was legal.

The only places I can think of off the top of my head that are still there from when I was in school are Little Italy, Resort, and the frickin Bel-Jean, which probably only exists because the University keeps it in business.

A new place opened in the location. Not sure if it’s the same owner (don’t think it is).

Downtown Taco Stand was less a culinary experience and more a cultural one. Like Gyro Wrap, if felt, smelled, and sounded like stepping back into the 80s and 90s.

Mayflower and Blue Sky (blue sky changed names to Walkers but it's basically the same place). The Grill is still there (but I'm not a fan).

Regarding Bel Jean, all the dozens of law offices downtown help keep them in business too.

No more chili cheese slaw dogs and onion rings to nurse the hangover. This is an injustice. Friggin’ liberals.
