I used to have the M16 I used in the Army in the late 60s. I was allowed to purchase it when discharged with the promise I would convert it to semi-auto.
Unfortunately it fell overboard in the lake and the same bad fate has happened to every registered gun I used to own. I miss them all.

Get a .308. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting at a distance.

This is a great gun that you can find typically for under $600. So with your wacky paint job I would think sub $1000 total
I just bought this gun Sunday

This might be the best post I've ever read on the GSB. Thank you, sir.

Just buy a Colt LE 6920 or the new FN AR15 those are as close to what we had in the Middle East as you can get without additional paperwork. Both run about $930.

I want the old school A1 or A2 look. When I was dating Harley Quinn (the one before my ex-wife), she was stationed at Ft. Stewart. Took me to the range and had me shoot her M4 and I taught her how to shoot the 1911. Good times.

I like the fancy paint job... might kill a deer with it
If you are serious about deer hunting with an AR type rifle, then you should probably consider an AR-10 in a heavier caliber like .308.

JD,
I submit to you that the AR-15 culture is more douchbag than the Frat Boy Weed culture.
What is your opinion?
Seriously, what's wrong with a good Ruger GP100? Colt Python, if you got the $$$$.

Has anyone tried out those new AR-15 shopping carts at the grocery store yet?
Could use a Gen 5 pistol grip mod on the horizontal push bar, and there was a little front-wheel flutter in the aisle straight aways that a 8-997B-3 could probably fix quick, but still a highly efficient no-nonsense piece of equip[ment.
There's even a place to put your milk, bread, and bologny.

I don't believe that Uncle Sam LET you bring one home. Thanks for the embellished story though.
Speaking to the original poster. The Colt SP1 while no longer made can be found at gun shows and shops. Colt made these from the late 60's to the early 80's so there are some out there. They are the closest thing to a Vietnam/Cold War era "M-16" that you can buy without having to go Class III and spend $$$$$$ to get the real thing.
Here is a picture of an SP1:

Step one: buy a complete rifle lower offline and ship it to your local gun shop, pay the transfer fee.
Step two: order a complete upper (including charging handle and bolt carrier group). This can ship to your house.
Step 3: put them together using two push pins, ad optics, and shoot it.
If you pay more than $600 for an entry level AR you're being had.

Dude build you own, its really not hard. You can easily build a m16 style AR for about 500 to 600 bucks. It really just comes down to the type if barrel you want. You can get lowers really cheap. Cheap I mean as in like 80 bucks. Hit up the gun shows.
