Not going to pretend to be a scheme expert…just seems like pulling a bunch of huge dudes to the middle and running into the back of them hasn’t worked well for us this year.

Tate Ratledge was out, and our guard play was really poor.

I'm not dismissing the OL struggles but I have questioned ball carrier vision/ decisions all year. At times, rb's look like they're running blindfolded

We ran the ball really well until we encountered a short yardage situation. For some reason we kept banging our head against the wall with those play calls. Needed some more creativity

I think we were not being creative in short-yardage on purpose because we were up two scores in the 4th quarter on Kentucky and were trying to vanilla our way to a win without getting anybody hurt.

Not that that excuses the failures in those situations, and I’m sure it’ll get used as fuel for practice until the issue gets resolved.

Our OL has been inconsistent all year though. When they play well, they look like one of the best OL’s in the nation. When they don’t, the run blocking gets real ugly real quick.

The thing I have a problem with is this whole notion of “Well, we’re gonna need to be able to get a yard at some point against a better opponent so we should try this now”. There’s 100 ways to get 1 yard. Why are we so insistent that we get it up the middle?

We’re not bad running up the middle when we run the whole offense, but when we’re playing hella conservative then yesterday is going to happen against pretty much anyone. We run that shotgun hb toss play pretty successfully every time, yet for some reason I don’t recall us running it at all yesterday. I don’t get the seemingly intentional handicapping

We ran for 200+ yards yesterday with a huge chunk coming up the middle.

That’s because when running the whole offense we’re not telegraphing the play call 15 seconds before the snap. When you basically tell an SEC front 7 what you’re going to do before you do it, it’s going to be tough.

Again, that goes back to us being vanilla in those situations yesterday, which I think was us trying to keep the playbook smaller in the 2nd half.

I think it’s this exactly. Why show wrinkles when you don’t have to? Kirby said before and after the gameplan and expectations. He doubles down on that with the CBS reporter at the end. It was a good physical game. Kirby likes those.

Is this a recruiting problem or a coaching problem?

That jumbo package on the goal line is a loser against any decent defense.
All you are doing is loading a bunch of big bodies in the way of the running back being able to make any progress.
Everyone in the stadium knows that we are trying to push it up the middle and it simple isn't a smart play.

We should be running our regular offense on the goal line which was successful moving us down the field.
We have a fast mobile QB in Bennett.
We should be rolling him out with an option to hand off, pitch out, run himself or pass to trailing receivers.

Nothing wrong with their vision between the
20's on Saturday and we need to stop with the Jalen Carter experiment on the goal line.Dont think it's worked once.

Monken and Kirby are such idiots. I hope they read this thread for all of the answers above from the real experts.

How do you define "up the middle"?

Seriously

I for one hope we stop with the hurry up and in close bullshite at the goal line. I don’t recall to many of those run plays working.

Are we calling the play to go up the middle? I think Stet has other options in that package. The idea is to run up the middle but if Stet sees that is covered he can pull it back. I think the line is doing their jobs but our backs are being cute with their cut backs. It works in the middle of the field when the tight ends keep the linebackers honest, but not so much inside the one when the defense sells out to stop the run. I think we will see the tight ends used in those situations more in the future.
