Interesting, and depressing read from an A&M reporter on UGA's offense

Bad Jake

quote:

Would we get good Jake Fromm or bad Jake Fromm? We got bad Jake and I don't mean that in a good way.

For all of the talk about A&M facing a number of freshmen quarterbacks this season and backups, I’m not so sure that we didn’t see the worst pound for pound productivity out of the position today that we’ve seen all season from Georgia’s Jake Fromm. Fromm made some precise throws on fades when the Bulldogs scored their only touchdown but other than those four plays he was absolutely dreadful (7 of 19 for 53 yards). He missed on downfield throws and was late on easy throws to backs at the start of the game, any of which would have put the Aggies in an early hole and changed the complexion of the game. He failed to recognize blitzes and ran slow developing plays or plays into them. He finished 11 of 23 for just 163 yards and there’s no question that Mond significantly outplayed him today.

You switch quarterbacks and Georgia wins going away.

Watching Georgia’s offense was interesting because they used a minimal amount of creativity or modern concepts. They stayed in 11 personnel, didn’t put anyone in motion across the formation, no bootlegs or rollouts, a couple of quick throws, and didn’t run any RPOs with backside screens. They used the toss play away from A&M’s playside blitzes a few times but didn’t go to them consistently.

Time and time again, A&M didn’t have to do much but crowd the box and allow Georgia backs to come to them. Nothing came easy for the Bulldogs and while A&M had something to do with that Georgia really was their own worst enemy time and time again both in philosophy and execution.

Bash the QB struggling with bad weather all you want, but the bigger issue was what they quoted after about our vanilla play calling and formations. That's been the killer for most of the year outside of a few really good drives.

You've made it clear that, outside the Fromm household, you're one of Jake's biggest fans. That's fine, I was one of Aaron Murray's biggest fans despite the frequent criticism he received. But Fromm has not had a good year, and I'm talking about more than just a few bad or mediocre games. The good games have become the exception rather than the rule. You may disagree, but there's a pretty good consensus everywhere that Jake's potential ceiling was overrated and that he's part of our offensive problem.

whatever. i found this post interesting and enjoyed reading it. cool to see what their reporter thought about the game, our performance, and our offense. it's a bit slanted in their favor, but there are some observations that are almost impossible to argue.

The Cult of Fromm is very prominent in the UGA fanbase right now. Nothing is ever his fault. Any criticism of him is unfounded and means you hate him.

Yeah, I seldom post...mainly due to A Holes like yourself, and these kinds of replies. Carry on internet warrior.

How can you argue with this? This is what we routinely saw in all games this year. I don't believe that Jake Fromm is simply a worse QB this year, although you can look at some individual throws he has missed and argue that. That's rhythm and confidence. Something UGA's offense this year has rarely had or provided for Fromm. That doesn't mean I am a Fromm apologist, he shares some blame. I just don't think Coley has done enough to put him in situations routinely throughout the season to get him in a rhythm and do what he likes to do.

Even Gary mentioned it, when we switched to backshoulder stuff, something JF has always been money with, we went down the field and scored our only touchdown of the game.

I agree, I think Coley is the main problem. But he called a decent first half. Fromm overthrew at least 3 touchdown passes that were wide open.

Tom Brady and Dak Prescott looked pound for pound bad in yesterday's rain game.....

Beginning to think Texans just don't get SEC football, can't see past their big 12 goggles.

It's not a matter of being worse IMO. He's being forced into a more prominent role. I think more defensive coordinators are choosing to make Fromm throw frequently and further, and use the entire field. In other words, make our QB be the centerpiece of the offense, and Fromm's struggled to do that.

We've witnessed two years of Fromm playing good football as the rule, not the exception. Why all of the sudden does he not look so good this season? The "why" is what matters.

We have a new OC and all of our top targets from previous years gone and you wonder why our passing game is off? You and others are quick to throw the blame on Fromm without even acknowledging that there's more to it than what he is and isn't doing behind center.

Read my post above yours. Fromm functions best as a game manager and is struggling to do anything more than be a game manager.

I acknowledged the Coley problem last January on the day Chaney quit and several times since. I acknowledged the receiver problem last spring and summer, and several times since. I'm just not going to ignore or downplay the fact that Jake has some physical and apparently mental limitations as a QB, always there but more apparent this season. Like I said, Fromm is part of the problem, and as long as defenses force the issue he will remain part of the problem

What?

We've run all these "concepts" this year.We also attempted one backside that Jake had to eat and our other screens went nowhere. We've run rollouts and bootlegs this year but those are usually run to avoid a heavy pass rush or if you have a QB that can get you big yardage on the corner.

This guy is a smug, arrogant douche who's played way too much Madden.

Can’t blame any of that on a qb consistently missing wide open guys. The oc is scheming the player open, and the player is getting open. The only thing missing is the accurate throw.

I read it after posting. I agree with you. But the "why" in why Fromm has struggled being the centerpiece of the offense is still at least mostly accounted for in the OC and receivers discussion. It's not enough to say that we've struggled in those other areas so Fromm needs to do more. He's almost entirely dependent on those other areas for success, as nearly all pocket passing QBs are.

I'm glad you've pointed that out previously, so perhaps I should reframe my comments to the others who don't seem to care about those other variables. I agree with everything you said except the mental limitations comment. He's likely the best QB in the country from a mental aspect. He just lacks the other necessary components to be as successful as he has been in the past.

You might as well be saying "1980" because the comments from the peanut gallery have been about Fromm's "regression" all season, not just the two missed throws in the rain this past Saturday. He rarely misses throws in short-to-medium distances. The ones he's missed are the ones 30 yards, 40 yards, and deeper down field, which are not to wide open receivers. He's got to throw it over top of the coverage and place it nearly perfectly, which yes, he hasn't done consistently.

I'm certainly being more gracious to Fromm for this past week's performance because many QBs naturally struggle throwing the ball in very wet conditions. It's just harder to be accurate with wet balls compared to dry ones. But it's also why I have been mostly addressing comments about his performance all season and not just the game against A&M.

We've struggled on offense all season long. You and others here are quick to pin that entirely on Fromm. I'm simply trying to point out that a pocket passing QB requires a lot more help to be successful and Fromm hasn't gotten that help.

He doesn't pay me anything. I just hate seeing so many people responding out of emotion rather than reason.
