I am pretty sure most of you got an email asking for an end of year donation.

I hope everyone responds to them that they will not donate to the fund any more unless they are assured all monies will be spent per the what the fund states.

Which is...

The Georgia Bulldog Club is the fundraising arm of the Athletic Association charged with providing student-athlete scholarships, first class facilities and the financial support necessary for each of UGA’s 21 varsity sport programs.

"As a member of The Georgia Bulldog Club your commitment to Georgia Athletics is the lifeblood of our athletic program. The Athletic Association receives no federal, state or university funding; therefore it relies on the annual contributions from alumni and friends to provide our deserving student-athletes with the necessary academic and athletic tools to compete among the nation’s best."

Yet, when you are not looking, the UGA AA says this...

"When McGarity took over, his vision was to make an already esteemed and respected Southeastern Conference athletics department the best in the United States. In his two years at the helm thus far, McGarity’s athletic department has been able to donate between $4 million and $5 million annually back to the university itself. In fact, McGarity says the department has returned about $25 million back to UGA over the last decade."

And this

"
With its future secure in the powerful and profitable Southeastern Conference, McGarity says the UGA athletic department will be able to contribute its profits back to the university’s general fund for years to come.

“When we’re able to have a good year financially, we’re able to share that wealth,” McGarity says. “We have very few sources of revenue coming in, and we have to make sure we’re doing a good job managing those resources."

If we want to donate more to the GA fund, we will. It's not your place to do so as long as you are asking for donations from us under false pretenses. It is a further slap in the face when our AA cries poor mouth when it comes to Capital improvements as well as coaching and staff salary.

I don't plan on donating again for a while. The AD needs to prove to me everything you just said. Count me out for this year.

All these posts remind me of 4 year old children whining because they don't get their way.
Those donations to the academic side make the university better and improves the entire college experience for athletes and students alike. If you want football only, then remove the Georgia name from all uniforms and any references to the football program.
The university has improved its reputation in the academic community over the last 30 years.
Anyone is welcome to donate to the AA or not. We set up a scholarship in memory of my son-in-law when he passed away at age 31. We set it up through the AA, but it funds an academic scholarship for a non-revenue sport. I also make my annual Hartman Fund donation and purchase four season tickets. The Boys & Girls Club in Athens gets my tickets for several games that I don't attend.

Funny. I didn't hear that. I heard hard working folks threatening to withhold their money from an organization which elicits said monies fraudulently by claiming one thing when the reality is another.

People sometimes stop subsidizing the bad behavior of others when allowed the freedom to do so...

That's really great. You seem better than those who believe we should strive for excellence in both the Academic and Athletic departments. You should feel superior.

Last I checked, the AA already has some money to burn on things like scholarships and improving the academic experience. If they want to do more than that, they know where they can send a detailed list of exactly where my money is going to go and I will make a decision to donate or not to. Right now, I think I'll hold on to the money I bust my arse for until the leaders decide to start leading in a manner that I agree with.

Then I will move all mine and my kids donations to the GA Fund and they can all be Presidents Club Fellows and 3rd Pillar. At least we will get the Glory for the donations and not McGarity. Sounds like his P&L is just fine without us...

By all means, donate to the general fund. However, the point of this thread, is they are gathering money under false pretense. I do not support a bait and switch. The same way I would be pissed if I donated to the local police/fire and they ended up giving the money to the local school. If I donate to a specific cause, I expect my money to go to that cause.

I agree with your premise. If a donor wants to contribute to academic achievement at UGA there are plenty of avenues to do so. However, there should also be a means to contribute directly to the AD knowing that said monies will go towards athletic development. And specifically, I would imagine that the AD would get more donations if donors knew that our AD was committed to achieving a NC in football. Alabama is a prime example of commitment to athletic excellence and for this reason they have more revenue from many different sources and therefore more money to spend.

As such the problem with our AD/admins is lack of commitment. They have found what they consider an optimal economic model that wins just enough athletically to keep the donations coming in while allowing them to siphon money towards academic development. IMHO, the 2 recipients, athletics and academics, should be separate in terms of donations allowing donors to make an informed decision about where they want to make their contributions.

I had planned on making a fairly sizable donation (for me) at the end of this year towards the Hartman Fund until all this bullshite went down. I will still donate to the university and will increase my gift this year, but I'm not going to give a damn penny to the AD.

30M per year in donations has held steady for awhile now. I'm wish that the donations could go, a % atleast, could be assigned to a certain sport. I love that we win big in gymnastics, swimming, golf ..... But the big 3 is where I want to see us win big! I know if one of them mississippi schools can get a helo for recruiting, can't we get a leer jet or something? Get Richt a white stallion!
Once we get to far behind, there is no catching up.

All good points. One quick question:

Is there any precedent for other SEC Athletic Departments moving money around like this?

frick a end of the year donation. Imma keeping my 2 seats that I've had forever in 331, so that's a $650 donation by the 15th of Feb....

But the 2 I've only had for 6 years in 119 (bought & given to my son every year) are in jeopardy of not being renewed, just depends on how things play out 'tween now & 2/15/15...

I'm to the point the last 3 years where I only attend the big home games anyway (CU, UT, AU & GT this year and will only do SCe, Bama & Mizzou in '15) & give my son my extra tix in 331 for the other games...

If I do, that's about $1100 less ($500 donation & tix) from the junkman to the AD.... just a drop in the bucket, I know....
