AJC Article

quote:

“If the intent of HB 859 is to increase safety of students on college campuses, it is highly questionable that such would be the result,” Deal wrote in his veto message.
Bummer. Maybe next year.

I wanted to hear all of my professors bitch when he signed it. I only had one that was okay with the bill. I would have carried. As it stands now, I abide by the law and leave my gun in the car.

SMDH. Made the news here as well. Same sorry state of affairs as in my state which otherwise is fairly pro gun.

So for most states colleges remain gun free, albeit certainly not crime free, zones.

When I was in college I really felt like I was in some foreign land when I had to house my firearm with the campus police.

I had to do that on base. At least there you some security and whatnot. I don't want to break the law every time I go to class, but I would hate for my weapon to be in my car the day a crazy person decides to target my class. Will it ever happen? Probably not. I don't like working off of what ifs though.

Dont have a problem with it. Not a big issue for me though. Deal impressed me by vetoing the religious bill however. Took some balls. So did this one.

It doesn't take "balls" for a politician to veto anything. All it took was a quick "sir, yes sir" on the phone to the money-men who own him and told him to veto it. Grow up.

I suppose if you are still in school and never venture over to the North Campus I can understand why you would take that position.

I do not support gun control of any kind....but after some of the stupid shite I saw at college I could not imagine introducing people carrying guns into the mix.

Maybe actual college-aged kids. I kind of know my way around a firearm.

After seeing some of the drunken idiots at Saturday tailgates, maybe Deal did the right thing.

Same thing I thought when this bill was introduced. I'd have been more worried as a student with some of those dipshits carrying on campus than what I did experience.

I do agree with this.

I just don't think college students are mature enough to have this ability. I know there are responsible college students who use safe gun play, but there are a bunch more dumbasses around that college age (18-22) who haven't totally matured yet (some never do).

In fact, I would rather have the professors or college faculty carry and protect their customers (students). I think people should have the right to carry wherever, but in an instance like this if you can't carry on campus, then the school should be responsible for protecting its students.

I'm actually all for teachers getting proper training on a yearly basis, after which will be allowed to carry within the classroom to protect our students and future.

it was the wording...the way I understand it, had it restricted guns to professors/school personnel he would have signed it...while there are good guys who carry, it may have opened the door for a student to go rogue, which was his beef with the bill...I kinda get it

Campus carry has been in effect for almost 11 years in Colorado nasn't been an issue.I'm sure there are SEVERE penalties involved if someone puts alcohol in the mix.

Toting a gun in case someone starts shooting up the place you are at is "working off of what ifs"...
