This just an opinion article but since his contract with UGA is coming to an end, could it happen? Does TN have the money to throw at him for the hire? Discuss.

With Tennessee’s talks with Hugh Freeze all but dead, it is probably time to move on and explore other options to fill the vacant offensive coordinating job at Tennessee. Although it is very disappointing for Vol fans to be let down yet again, it is very important to remember that it isn’t the end of the world. Hugh Freeze is not the only elite offensive coordinator that Tennessee can hire.

The Vols still have many options. It is important for Tennessee fans to realize that many options remain on the table, and one of the most interesting names to keep an eye on is former Tennessee offensive coordinator and interim head coach, Jim Chaney, who is currently the offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia.

Jim Chaney was offensive coordinator at Tennessee under head coach, Derek Dooley from 2009-2012, and was the interim head coach for the final game of the 2012 season in which Tennessee throttled Kentucky 37-17. Chaney has done a great job at Georgia, as he led the Dawg’s offense to an SEC Championship and later to the National Championship game in 2017. This year, he lead the Dawgs to an SEC East title, and will meet Texas in the Sugar Bowl on January 1st.

Chaney would be an excellent hire, but the only question is if he would leave Athens to come back to Rocky Top to coach the Vols. He has great materials at Georgia, and Tennessee would have to throw a lot of money at him in order to lure him away from Athens. Would he be willing to make a less than lateral move to come back to a Tennessee program that is in the middle of a rebuild? Only Jim Chaney knows the answer to that question, but it wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world if the answer is yes.

For what it’s worth, Chaney’s deal with Georgia only runs through this season.

In the end, it would take a lot for Chaney to give up his very secure job in Athens. However, don’t count Tennessee out because they might just shock the world. Chaney is probably not the most likely candidate for Tennessee, but the timing could be right here.

I’ve seen rumors of him to Tn and Colorado now and both of them make zero sense to me.

Why would he ever leave the most comfortable position he could get unless he’s somewhat forced out?
But I don’t see that happening. Our offense has been really good under him despite my distaste for his play calling.

I dont think he would accept the position. UGA has been good to him. He's been good for us so far (even though I yell at him through the TV) except for a few dumbass calls. I also dont think TN has the money to throw at him right now.

Was just wondering about everyone's thoughts on the matter.

Spot-on summation and an excellent example of the illogical reasoning of the Cheney haters. Great offense-but I don’t like him. Jeez.

I never said I disliked him. Like any other coach, he has made mistakes. Geez.

Zero chance of this happening. There is literally no incentive for him to leave. UGA can easily match any amount of money offered up.

But the most important reason is why leave UGA right now when he has an outstanding QB for the foreseeable future, elite RBs and WRs coming out of his backside, and most importantly what will be the best OL in all of college ball over the next 3+ years?

Only a complete fool would leave a situation like this for a similar job elsewhere. Now if someone were to offer him a HC job then all bets are off, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

My bad. ‘Great offense, I just don’t like his play calling. That’s even more self contradictory.

The thing is, the OC is always going to be hated at times when plays or possessions don't. I can remember tons of bitching about Bobo. Bobo and Chaney were both successful. The OC is always going to be unpopular at times.

That can sometimes happen when you have the amount of talent we do. I got frustrated against LSU when we went away from the run so early. I got frustrated against UF when we ran the same play on the 1 yardline 3 times and left the same guy unblocked. I think we run too many toss plays to the short side of the field.

But our offense has been very efficient for the most part, and I don’t understand messing up the continuity for something we’re not positive will work.

I’m obviously biased towards myself , but I don’t think that’s an entirely unreasonable take.

I think Bobo really got it together the last two years, but his first years were worse then Chaney for sure. I would love to have him back and I think it would get Haselwood in the fold for sure being as we would probably be a more 50/50 team.

There has been a couple of times Kirby was shown screaming into the headset at a coordinator, and it was thought to be at Chaney. I don't think it has been confirmed, though.

I actually really like his play calling, but that tends to come down to personal taste. We do tend to go into safe mode against Alabama when we get the lead, but I tend to think that is at Kirby's instruction more than Chaney's doing. Hard to say for sure, though.

ETA
I should clarify one thought, since DOT mentioned running the ball up the middle so much on the goal line against Florida. It's a legitimate complaint. My take on it, though, is Kirby wanted to show we could power the ball against a legit defense up the middle on the goal line, to set up a play for later games. fake the ball up the middle, then toss out wide, or QB keep around the end...or even fake up the middle, then pop up and hit the TE with a quick pass. That is just a guess, and I would hope that is why we did that. If it isn't, then I would be complaining about those plays, too.

Honestly, would it be a bad thing if Chaney left as long as Pittman stayed?

It seems like Coley and McGee are more instrumental in keeping the program at the top, not only by coaching, but by their recruiting success as well, and I would want to keep both around as long as possible, and having Chaney leave and promoting one to OC, would probably be best for the program going forward.

If you listen to VolNation, Chaney is already signed, sealed, and delivered.

Someone mentioned if Chaney was a possibility, and by page two they already had Chaney as being the guy, especially when some source stated that they were 95% close to having already hired a guy.

Volnation is good for laughs, and that's about it.

It would be to an extent. I mean, would the new coordinator run the same type offense? Would our committed offensive recruits remain committed if Chaney recruited them. Some people on the board would have us believe that Chaney is a bad coordinator, but the truth is he is well respected. A lot of people (not all) that don't like Chaney base it off what Tennessee and Arkansas fans said about him, ignoring that a coordinator is somewhat handcuffed with what he can do by the talent available to him.

I understand what you are saying...but what if neither are good at being an offensive coordinator? I agree we should try to keep Coley and McGee, though.

McGee needs to be paid more, just to make sure we keep him. I'd be shocked if other programs aren't interested in hiring him away. I thought he should have gotten more the last bump he received.
