You mean a redshirt freshman who played mostly DL in HS hasnt earned a starting SEC OL spot yet? I'm shocked. Too early to call him a bust.

I think most people assumed he would be a starter by now as he appeared to be the jewel lineman of his recruiting class. Now, a lot of the same folks are making excuses about him not having experience. There is some validity to this, but I think if these people were honest, they would admit they thought he would be a starter by now...

No. Most every analyst realized after he made the camp circuits that he has all the physical tools to become a dominant offensive lineman, but he had no experience and therefore no technique or idea of how to play the position. Most people who really followed recruiting and who looked at things outside of his initial 5-star rating realized that he would need a couple of years before he was really ready to play at an SEC level. That's why he slid down the rankings after camp season.

Why label a kid a bust after 16 games of his career? What are we trying to accomplish? Are we trying to earn e-cred by predicting the future?

If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. But no one controls this man's destiny but himself.

I know that we are recruiting OL at a high level. But a 21 year old is going to have an edge over an 18 year old. Cleveland just turned 19 about a month ago.

So he is a Sophomore in terms of experience who should be contributing at a high level this season based on his recruiting ranking. He would appear to have the physical tools so if he's not a starter on the OL by the end of the season then either he's not getting the coaching he needs or something is missing in his skill set. If playing mostly DL in HS is the issue, then the coaches might be trying to fit a square peg into a round hole due to the greater need on OL or he's also not an adequate fit on the DL. We should have an answer by the end of the season.

How did the narrative of him having no experience come into play? I just texted my friend from Toccoa and he said the kid played both ways. DE and OT. He also enrolled early and has two full spring practices. The picture that was painted is not he lacks the experience... it's that he is not learning.

He played considerably less on offense and it's not like you need a lot of technique playing OL in high school when you are that much bigger than everyone.

I think that is his issue.

No, but he's getting into a danger zone of getting buried in the depth chart.

Gaillard made the transition AFTER one full year of playing DL in college and I don't believe he had much OL PT in HS.

Hope he at least gets in the roTatian at OT by the end of the year.

Also, for what it is worth. 4 star and 5 star rated players, by definition, can contribute immediately. If he was a 5 dipping to a 4, that still does not mean a 2-3 year project player. That's what 2-3 stars will be. I think the guy is a 3 star player with a body type that could allow him to grow into a starter and maybe a pro one day if he can learn. He could one day contribute and be real good...
But he is a project... and 4 stars are not projects.
