Yes, but only because of the inflated hype during his recruitment. Expectations were set high for him and because the results aren't as expected, he seems like a disappointment.

The reality is that he could still be really good for us. It's just difficult for someone who isn't a natural offensive lineman to compete with more experienced, natural linemen. I'm sure he'll get his shot and he'll do well for us. Just not yet.

Yep, those gifted big bodies are hard to find so he was probably rated more based on his size and potential rather than what he had learned in HS. But he has had a full redshirt season to learn so hopefully he will develop into a starter during this season. Regardless, we definitely need the depth on the OL.

But, wasn't he a 5 star out of HS? Or, was it 4?

I can save ya some time. Read the responses in this thread

Ranking offensive lineman is very tough. Ben was ranked on potential (maybe a tad high). Hopefully you don't melt if Wilson isn't starting at the beginning of next year. They may both be second string next year. Depends on the best five. We have depth, and Salyer(who most believe will start) coming.

Cleveland has been fighting his tail off and really had to get used to what he was up against last year. Getting your butt whipped everyday in practice will do something to you mentally when you've always dominated competition.

He's a redshirt freshman. We have an absolute freak of an athlete playing RT as a true freshman and the rest are upperclassman. No he is not a disappointment. If he isn't starting at one of the guard positions by his junior season then yes he is.

Also, for what it is worth. 4 star and 5 star rated players, by definition, can contribute immediately. If he was a 5 dipping to a 4, that still does not mean a 2-3 year project player. That's what 2-3 stars will be. I think the guy is a 3 star player with a body type that could allow him to grow into a starter and maybe a pro one day if he can learn. He could one day contribute and be real good...
But he is a project... and 4 stars are not projects

Is this defined in the bible? Narnia? Or just the abyss of your mind?

That is not what 247 rankings mean. It is ranking top end potential (not 18 year old or 19 year old potential).

Rare prospects: 100-90 [Five stars]
These players demonstrate rare abilities and can create mismatches that have an obvious impact on the game. These players have all the skills to take over a game and could make a possible impact as true freshmen. They should also push for All-America honors with the potential to have a three-and-out college career with early entry into the NFL draft.

Outstanding prospects: 89-80 [Four stars]
These players have the ability to create mismatches versus most opponents and have dominant performances. These players could contribute as a true freshmen and could end up as all-conference or All-America candidates during their college careers and develop into difference-makers over time.

Good prospects: 79-70 [Three stars]
These players show flashes of dominance, but not on a consistent basis -- especially when matched up against the top players in the country. Players closer to a 79 rating possess BCS-caliber ability and the potential to be a quality starter or all-conference player. Players closer to a 70 rating are likely non-BCS conference caliber prospects.

Solid prospects: 69-60 [Two stars]
These players are overmatched versus the better players in the nation. Their weaknesses will be exposed against top competition, but have the ability to develop into solid contributors at the non-BCS FBS level and could be a quality fit for the FCS level of play.

Did you make that up?

I've seen 4 star prospects scored as high as 98. 3 star prospects at 87.

When a recruit is scored between 80-89, the last thing I'm thinking of is all conference. 80-89 is less likely to be a starter than a backup.

It looks like you copied that from some dude's blog.

We were friends for a long time, recorded some good music together years ago. But he went off the deep end after his divorce.

I don't know about Hayride, but he was in OGLY, and a Misfits cover band, and had connections with the Quiet Men in Athens in the mid 90's.

Incidentally, Cleveland was practicing at #2 LG so far this week instead of at RT. Apparently the notion is to try to get more mass inside.

I can see Cleveland developing enough to take one of the starting guard slots by the end of this season, certainly by next year. Kindley and Cleveland at the guards would be quite the jumbo tandem.

This seems good. Once Thomas took the RT spot, it sure seems like we're pretty comfortable to let him own it going forward... he's made mistakes and isn't consistent but he's pretty decent there for a freshman. I don't see why Cleveland couldn't be in the mix to displace Sims/Baker/? at the revolving door that seems to be LG right now.
