It's been kind of a theme for UGA recruiting for some time now. Start well with some top recruits. Hang in there with other top recruits, from in-state and out, leaving some sincere hope of an amazing haul on signing day.

Signing day comes and there are few true surprises, and the ungodly crop of 5 stars we had a shot with pretty much dissipates to just the sure things.

We end with a very good class (Top 10 even), but still behind 4-6 other SEC teams. This year does not appear to be any different.

Hope I'm wrong, but I'll believe it when I see it. Been down this road many times before.

Yup. No one closes with everyone they're in on.

This class could have been legendary if we had retained Pruitt as the DC.

Due to Greg McGarity's being a wuss, we handed Pruitt to Alabama and probably neutralized the advantage we got with Smart.

Smart plus Pruitt would have locked up Hardman and Brown. Now...we'll be lucky to get either. Loose canon or not, letting Pruitt go wasn't a good strategic move.

wtf are you talking about? Kirby was given 100% control, he decided not to keep pruitt. If you're pissed at anyone for pruitt not being here be pissed at kirby.

Some have said that everything was on the table except for Pruitt.

But if what you've said is true, that could mean that Smart was a bit threatened by Pruitt. Which would not be a good sign about Smart...

Because no matter how you slice it, there is no way that Mel Tucker was a better choice for a DC than Pruitt...not on coaching ability, anyway.

Well Kirby vacated the DC position at Bama. It was open. Despite what we really want to believe, it wasn't much of a choice. Coach five stars or three and four stars.

I think what happened was more about the situation than what Kirby was "allowed" to do.

Pretty much calling Kirby a dumbass then. We're screwed.

What are you talking about? Pruitt was a big enough a-hole to challenge St. Richt. You're delusional if you think that is the best DC to work under a first time HC.

Pretty much. The exception I'm thinking of is FSU when they were in the midst of their run of something like 14 years with Top 5 AP Poll finishes under Bowden.

They would have a decent recruiting class. Then on signing day they would reel them 5 star frickers in like bluegills.

Unreal how much success they used to have on signing day.

My understanding is that Mel Tucker is a much better coach than Pruitt, particularly with DB's and fundamentals, and that Pruitt was a better recruiter...this from Alabama folk that follow their program

I think the only way to have kept Pruitt was to have kept Richt. And even then he might have bolted or even gotten the boot. It really was that bad. Y'all haven't heard the half of it (and I'm not blaming Pruitt here or praising him. I'm just telling you it was a circus. And not the fun kind of circus, but the Communist era Eastern European all the clowns are frowning and/or psycho head cases type of circus).

So Kirby has done a monumentally good job pulling together what he has so far, both in staff and recruits, given the situation he walked into and the responsibilities he still had.

Anything around a Top 10 finish in recruiting this year is gold, given the turnover, turmoil, issues, etc.

Which if you believe Mike Ekeler, is exactly the case. He didn't specifically point to Pruitt, but if you read between the lines, he said that if they are great recruiters, they "can't coach a lick." Not that I believe one way or the other, just saying that's how I interpreted what Ekeler said.

I hear you. But he could coach a lot better than those mfers on offense.

I'm not sure I buy that Pruitt was a great recruiter but a terrible coach. In a couple of seasons, his defense was starting to become a force (definitely miles ahead of the offense)...and his players sure pleaded for him to be retained.

If anything will be Pruitt's undoing, it's his apparent lack of self-control...

Not a dumbass, just a young, new head coach who was possibly intimidated by another young coach about his age, who happens to be a bit of a domineering personality. Maybe Smart wasn't up to the challenge of managing someone like Pruitt...clearly he had no fear of Richt, based on showing up at his house and chewing him a new one!

No argument here haha. I liked Pruitt, liked how the players loved him. Just hate to hear the pissing contest that took place this year, and if moving on prevents it, so be it

Why is everyone saying Davis is going to bama a sure thing? Every time he talks or does an interview he always mentions UGA being in the lead still. Did i miss something? Or are people just speculating

Jaleel Laugins

quote:

It was definitely the first time I was uncomfortable in my own house,” Laguins laughed. “Just the intimidation of having Nick Saban in your living room — that right there just makes you want to sit upright. I’m in my own house, and I’m supposed to walk around in my boxers, but no, I had to put on some khakis and a button down.”

The 6-foot-2, 209-pounder told SEC Country that the meeting between him, his family and the Alabama coaches lasted around 45 minutes. In that time, the Crimson Tide made inroads at potentially flipping his commitment down the road.

“I would say it has improved, especially with Nick Saban coming into my house,” Laguins said. “Having the head coach himself coming to see you lets you know that you aren’t just a number. You’re a guy that they want. The same can be said for Smart when he comes to my house. That just lets me know that I’m not a number.”

Alabama was the first school to stop by his home. The U.S. Army All-American said Georgia assistant Glenn Schumann is supposed to stop by his high school on Friday before Laguins heads to Florida for an official visit. He did say that Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart is supposed to have an in-home visit next week when he returns from Gainesville.

As far as his status with his commitment to Georgia, Laguins said he is still solid with the Bulldogs.

“I am committed to Georgia, but I am still going to take my official visits,” he said.
