Kirby's first in home visit. 2017 DB William Poole
quote:

Poole is rated as a 4-star cornerback by the 247sports composite. But he’s regarded as a 5-star cornerback and as the nation’s No. 3 cornerback by Rivals.

It appears he’s held in even higher esteem than that by Smart. Poole said Smart told him he wanted to make him his first visit on the road as nothing but the head coach at UGA.

What did Smart say?

“Just to come up and visit kind of privately,” Poole III told DawgNation. “Not with so much other recruits around. So I can sit down with him and (defensive coordinator Mel Tucker) and so we can watch film and they can really break down how they want to use me in their defense.”

It turned out to be a well-calculated visit. While Poole named UGA, Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Florida State as his Top 5 schools on Christmas Eve, he told DawgNation.com he’s really down to just two schools at this time.

It boils down to Georgia and Florida. Poole said he will be committed to one of those two schools before this summer.

Poole said Smart clearly let him know where he stands with UGA.

“What he showed me was that he really wanted me at UGA and I was his first visit on the road,” he said. “I was the No. 1 DB on his board and a major priority.”

Wait, there’s more.

“He wants to create a dynasty and that I can come in and play Day 1,” Poole told DawgNation.

The 6-foot, 176-pounder said he still feels the same about UGA after the visit. He’s now set his mind on figuring out his where he wants to play at the next level. He’ll visit UGA and Florida this winter and collect the data he needs to make his decision.

Not a dumbass, just a young, new head coach who was possibly intimidated by another young coach about his age, who happens to be a bit of a domineering personality. Maybe Smart wasn't up to the challenge of managing someone like Pruitt

Or how about a first year head coach wanting to pick and choose his own staff and not keep an assistant who is known to be a cancer?

I find it odd that our HC's very first visit after the dead period was to see a kid from the 2017 class. Aren't there much more pressing matters, like say the 2016 class that signs in 3 weeks??

Agreed. Not sure why the first in-home is with a 2017 kid, who we have another year to get signed. I was hoping his first visit would have been to D. Brown or Hardman TBH.

In a couple of seasons, his defense was starting to become a force

I'm still not sure I even buy this. You have to keep in context the relative schedule that UGA has played the last two seasons. Just the UF game alone was enough for me to question Pruitt's ability to get the defense prepared to play when it matters. They got shredded. By an offense with TREON MF'IN HARRIS at the helm... I just don't see an explanation for it. He completes something like 3 passes in the game, but you give up ~200 yards to 2 different backs in 2014. Then in 2015, you decide to let him show that he can run a balanced offense, so he throws for 150 on 8 passes and then give up a little less on the ground. You could write 2015 off on the offense in some ways as they were atrocious, but in both of the UF games, the defense was as much if not more to blame IMO.

Similarly, in both UT games (2014 W, 2015 L), the defense could hardly have been seen as a strength. Struggling to get off the field on 3rd down, getting torched by a "young" team.

I like that we statistically looked good, but to the eye, in what are arguably the 2 most important conference games, the defense never looked great. This doesn't mean I think Pruitt is a terrible coach, simply that I wasn't sold on him while he was here. If Kirby has an opinion on what the coaching staff needs to look like, I trust his judgement right now. Until he proves that it's bad, I'll assume he knows a bit more about how to coach a team, build a staff, and evaluate recruits than I do.

Exactly what I thought when I started reading that one. Doesn't make much sense.

Only thing I can think is they planned a trip and it was the easiest "starting point" for the path they put together. Otherwise, from an in-home perspective, maybe they want to be a little closer to Signing Day with those guys that are in this year's class (given the amount of flip flopping that happens toward the end). Just not sure that's a well calculated move given the turnover/turmoil with UGA staff this year. Seems that solidifying guys that were leaning your way would be critical.

HCs only get one in-home per prospect. Better off saving those for the very end.

His visits right now are checking in at high schools.

My main point is why is he focused on a 2017 kid, when he could have used the "you are my very first visit as HC, that is how much you mean to me, I want you on my team" card on one of the 2016 kids we only have 3 weeks to sway? D-Rob, Mecole, those guys that are wavering- why wouldn't he go straight to them yesterday morning?

Because he can't do that and still have an in-home left. That's why all assistants went in-home with 2016s while he was checking in at high schools.

These kids has other visits planned before KS was even named coach....not to mention they were in school all day. They will both get the love from KS and probably got 5 calls each while he was on the plane. You all are thinking too much into this.

Ok that makes more sense. Save that in home close to NSD to really seal the deal

Plus I believe Eason did a LOT of work on the targets left at the Army game. I'm hoping that pays dividends in the end. That's one reason I think Kirby went to see Poole first. I think he was trying to get some top guys on board early for '17 so they can work hard to recruit others.

Usually at this time, if a HC visits, they are going after someone they might feel they trail on.

Fair enough- I admittedly don't know the ins and outs of the recruiting process, I just found it a bit odd, but that makes sense to me

If I saw Chaney walking through the halls...I'd immediately think he was a substitute teacher haha. In addition, that coach looks like he may be a serial killer
