Should we go for a transfer QB as either competition for Marcel or as an out right replacement for Marcel? As of right now I think Conner is going to transfer so our depth chart would be Marcel then O’Neill followed by Hart.

It’s early but right now here are some QB in the portal:
Kaidon Salter-Liberty
Miller Moss-USC
Rickie Collins-LSU
Matthew Sluka-UNLV
Anthony Colandrea-UVA

Need a championship caliber in campus. There should be at least some doubt that Marcel can be that guy, so I think you have to find a starting caliber QB in the portal. It won't be easy, because a dozen other teams will be as desperate.

With Connor gone I think it is necessary to find an experienced guy out of the portal. Even if it is insurance against injury. Without it, if the Aggies lose Marcel, an SEC functional level QB is grim without a transfer.

Weigman and Jaylen Henderson have both hit the portal. It's no longer a question of if we should, but more of who do we pursue.

I would hope that Elko and Klein get Reed a personal QB coach over the off-season. Reed needs a lot of polishing to not just his accuracy, but also his in-game composure that gave away plays to the defenses. I would hope Klein finds a pure passer in the portal in case Reed isn't able to improve his tendencies.

Of course it goes without saying that we need to load up on WRs and RBs. I would hope that Elko goes up to the AD this week and asks for a bigger coaching budget to hire better assistants. First and foremost, get rid of Bateman. Falling behind Auburn and Texas right out of the gate was unacceptable. You shouldn't need an entire half to figure out the opponent.

Bateman is the #1 guy I would replace on this staff.

With a couple of QBs in the up coming class, do we have to take a portal QB? I know you want depth and all that, but that will be 4 QBs on the roster, most teams don’t have 5. Plus we really need to bring in some more competition for CB, S, and WR in particular so I’d kinda rather use roster space on those spots.

Agreed that Reed has a lot of growing to do. You can see why there’s growing pains with a redshirt freshman trying to lead your team, there were definitely some frustrating moments this season. I really hope he works on keeping his head up and progressing through reads, there were several times in games he missed a wide open guy because he was already looking to scramble or locked in on his one read. Develop that and a little more accuracy while keeping his mobility and he could be a good one.

And I’m not so sure it was budget related why we ended up with some of the assistants/coordinators we did. Just was who Elko hired at the time. I do remember a lot of people being unimpressed with the DC hire when it was announced. I get the sense Elko isn’t making any big staff changes this year, but I guess we will see.

Hart.

Hart is only 16 years old and rail-thin. It would downright criminal to put him on the field against a SEC defense without at least 2 years in the S&C program. He's listed at 180 lbs. He needs to put on AT LEAST 30, preferably 40 if his current listed weight is correct.

I seriously doubt a bunch of guys who transferred b/c they weren't guaranteed to start are going to want to come here.

This doesn't describe all the QBs in the transfer portal. There will be guys looking to level up, either G5 to P5, or some guys at crappy P5 schools looking for a more prominent spot.

How attractive/aggressive we are is TBD, but a properly motivated staff would be capable of finding the right transfer to pair with Reed for a necessary QB competition

Marcel was ok this year, but we should be hunting someone with a real shot at taking QB1 in the portal. I would be shocked if we don't grab a QB from the portal, and hopefully not a depth piece.

Aside from Salter that's exactly who those guys in the OP are and after seeing several Liberty games this year I wouldn't touch him w/a 10 foot pole as the guy looked like he couldn't be bothered to give a single frick whenever they lost. No way in hell I want a guy leading the team who is laughing and smiling after throwing picks and losing games.

Cut the bait on Bateman. Sean "chaos" Spencer too. I'd keep TJ-E primarily because he's a redass Ag and has worked with studs, but hopefully he is actually a good on field coach to the guys.

Elko better get help on the D. And get a good clear picture on how the O is going to pan out. If he keeps the same guys and same schemes, that's on him. He's a smart guy though, so hopefully he doesn't get into the typical "coach think" boneheadedness of being too stubborn rather than let the priors change his mind.

Mateer (Wazzu) Mendoza (Cal) and Mensah (Tulane) are the three I would be looking hardest at. I’m not sure if they entered with a predetermined destination or not but I think they’d all be upgrades on Reed

He's not in the portal and I assume if he left Tulane it would be b/c Kentucky hired Sumrall away.

With the increase in scholarship limits and the end of the "walk-ons" era, I'd make a run at Jackson Arnold and let the weakest link transfer out after spring practice.

Marcel Reed has a high ceiling, but he isn't reaching it next season. Marcel is a good decision maker and has great pocket awareness. But his accuracy still needs some work and his pre-snap composure needs to be polished so that opponents can stop sniffing out our plays (Arkansas, South Carolina, and Texas all probably knew what signs to look for...Mizzou and LSU prepped for the wrong QB)

I think it was. Buying out Jimbo + his assistants and then hiring Elko + assistants and still having money left over for NIL (for guys like Nic Scourton) probably tapped our boosters for the fiscal year.

For comparison, Florida refused to fire Sunbelt Billy because they scoffed at the price tag. If fired today, Napier would be owed $13 Million now and $13 million spread out over three years. Compare that to Jimbo who was owed $26.5 Million after firing and $7.6 million once a year until 2031.

Yes, our boosters and school are LOADED. But everyone has their limits and I think last year they were happy to budget on new assistants if it meant getting rid of Jimbo.

I think now is the time for Elko to approach boosters with a request to hire better assistants.

Truth be told, I'm kind of split on Collin Klein. I would like to give him another year and see what he changes this off-season. His offense lacked good WR play this year. I'm not sure if he needs a better WR coach or just better players. He also needs to load up on at least one more stud RB. We'll see....I know his name has been a hot commodity around the CFB world.

But if for some reason there is a spontaneous separation between Klein and A&M, my first call would be to Jerrod Johnson. The guy loves A&M and he is a rising star in the NFL. If momma calls, I would find it hard for him to turn us down and not come running to call our offense.

I was generally fine w/him until it got to 3rd/4th and short. Even RC Slocum was like "Holy shite, stop running up the middle when your big RBs are out!"

I agree. A&M needs to find a good QB who is a junior or senior. Young guys need a mentor. If you consider the multimillion dollar value of the A&M football team as a business, you have to have good to great and developed QB talent. Instead the Aggies have had underclassmen (King, Weigman, Reed) and transfers (Johnson, Henderson) who've not worked. Frustrating.
