Looks like defense is going to be simply elite this year

Been reading the open practice reports, and the one thing I can say with almost certainty is that the defense is going to be insanely good. Cooper fast enough to cover Achane out of the backfield at LB, DEEP in the secondary, and unfairly DEEP on the DL. Numerous DL sat out the practice and apparently it was still wave after wave of fresh, talented guys

We are going to rotate a lot this year it looks like, and not just on the DL. LB depth is the only thin spot on the defense.

Evans is starting at WR
Apparently Anderson will be tough to keep off the field
All of the freshmen TE's are impressive
All of the RB's looked good catching passes out of the backfield
Our OL will be better than many expect going against the DL at practice
QB is wide open, but it looks like King has the most command of the offense. He also still has some WTF throws

Did anyone actually get to see it in person?

Cautiously optimistic.

Losing Elko was huge.

I think we will be way more aggressive on defense. Elko had massive issues with teams like MSU because he would sit back and wait for the other team to make a mistake. Passive. Elko was terrible against the spread teams, and by the time he adjusted you are in a hole

See MSU, and OM for prime examples last year.

Havent followed much of the practice reports, so its good to hear the defense should be a strong suit. We are gonna need it, as I'm worried our offense will still struggle to put lots of points up and we will need to hold teams to as few points as possible.

Elko might not have been perfect, but he was a dang good coach, so if we have a lot of talent on the field, that will make it easier for his replacement to hit the ground running.

Elko was great at base defense, one of the best. But two of the best offensive minds in the game made him look helpless. To be fair, they do that to a lot of defensive coordinators. But there was ZERO excuse to lose to both MSU and OM last year.

BTW, our new DC made Fisher look pretty stupid in the OM game as well.

I agree, but I put both of those losses more on the offense than the defense. 22 and 19 points just arent that much in today's high scoring games.

I think our own offensive execution made defenses look better than they were, just my two cents. I still think Fisher's biggest weakness is putting together a top notch offense. Outside of 2020 I just havent seen it. Hope it comes together this year, especially with some of the assistant coach roles shifting they announced last week.

State was completely on the offense. They were really struggling against Arkansas and State before miraculously turning it around against Alabama. Calzada just wasn't seeing things down the field.

Ole Miss was a disaster all the way around. It was wild the score was as close as it was.

This. The TD pass he threw against Bama to tie the game late was the exact same route he overthrew to Smith vs. State that would have won the game.

Defense kept us in both those games WAY longer than we deserved to be, tbh. Same for Arkansas.

We lost both of those games b/c the offense was trash.

Miss State averaged 26.9 ppg last year and was held to 26. Miss State defense gave up 27.3 ppg last year and held us to 22.

Ole Miss averaged 32 ppg last year and was held to 29. Ole Miss defense gave up 25.3 ppg last year and held us to 19.

We lost b/c the offense couldn't do a damn thing all game long. You can't expect to win games scoring 19 and 22 in today's CFB. It's not a winning formula.

Our defense gave up just 17.1 ppg last year which was good for #4 in the nation. Unfortunately, our offense only put up 27.3 ppg which had us waaaaay down at #63 in the nation. LINK

Our defense gave up 20+ points just 5 times last year. 4 of those were losses b/c our pitiful offense could not move the ball w/any consistency. Hell, we were lucky to beat Colorado and they only scored one time.

Yep, hard to argue with those stats. We need the defense to still be really good this year because I'm still not sure our offense isnt going to struggle. I think losing Elko is gonna hurt more than help, he really did a good job here and finally had me over my battered aggie syndrom of sweating bullets when we got to 3rd and chavis on defense.

Can't use this as an excuse. Who is coaching at Baylor? Who is coaching at Texas? At Oklahoma? Teams lose important coaches every year.

Everyone’s been giving Jimbo all kind of excuses so far in his tenure. Are those officially done with now that he’s in year five? Or are we getting some more of “Well... not this year but next year for sure!!!”

He needs to win this year. I don't care if King's leg falls off - no excuses. He's been entirely average at A&M

This place is the complete opposite of the sunshine pumpers on Texags. Constant negativity is kind of a downer in the preseason. But if we go 8 and 4, I'll have to join in.

Gotta have balance in your life. The non koolaide drinkers being called sips or trolls over there gets super annoying too. I think you get more of a balanced/realistic take over here.

Just wish we had more discussion in general. This board is still dead and yet the season is about 3 weeks away. I think part of it is tempered expectations after last season's flop.

Flop was the result of #1 QB being injured. We all know that. And also because we had no true #2 and absolutely no #3. Sorry Blake. And all that was caused by having Mond as a four year starter. In that four years the QB situation went stale. There has been no excitement at QB since JFF. Four year starting QB is not a good situation unless they are an eventual first rounder.
