I guess so. I definitely thought chavis was a really good hire at the time, I’ll admit that.

But I remember thinking that our offense wasn’t nearly as good as it looked on paper (and had been that way for several years), how they would leave our defense out to dry by going 3 and out several times in a row, not being able to gain a yard on 4th and 1, etc. and that Sumlin just wasn’t building a good program on either side of the ball despite being able to recruit 4 and 5 star receivers.

Yeah this.

2012 Johnny, the O line, and our WRs got him an extension.

2013 and 2014 got us new coordinators because it couldnt have been sumlins fault.

2015 people started realizing he may not be the real deal. Then qb transfers happened.

2016 Trevor Knight single handedly saved his job with a 6-0 start including 3 ranked wins, 2 in Kyle, 1 being a top 10 win. Too bad all 3 of those teams were actually bad. Got ranked in the playoff rankings. Everyone was so hyped. Then we lost to Mississippi State, Ole Miss,LSU, and fricking kstate. All because trevor knight got injured.

Then came UCLA. No possible way he recovered from that. I've never been as disinterested in Aggie football as I was in 2017.

Thank God we played Arky and USC early in 2017. Otherwise our 6 game P5 losing streak may have gone on longer.

Even UCLA wasn't enough to convince some vocal idiots. Once he got blown out at home by Mississippi State and Auburn in back to back weeks he pretty much had to beat LSU in Baton Rouge to save his job.

If blowing a 34 point lead doesnt convince you that you need a new coach, then you need to literally bury your head in the sand

There were a lot of red flags throughout Sumlin's tenure, starting in 2013. But there was always something, big or small, to allow people to hold out hope. He never completely bottomed out, or had any public scandals, which would have made it easier to move on. But most people are averse to change by nature, and coaching changes & the buyouts they carry are sometimes best avoided, so the can just kept getting kicked down the road until it became clear nothing would truly change as long as he was in charge of the program.

That seemed to be a theme of sumlin’s career, beating overrated teams. Outside of bama & OU 2012 and maybe miss state in 15, was there any legitimately good team we beat that wasn’t vastly overrated?

Overrated teams that were ranked when we played, but shouldn’t have been:

USCe 2014
Auburn 2014
Arizona state 2015
Tenesssee 2016
Arkansas 2016
UCLA 2016

Auburn 2014 was a legit team, #11 nationally according to Sagarin. They had 4 top 30 wins, which was tied for 4th most in the nation.

Same for Arkansas 2015. #15 overall, 4 top 30 wins.

Tennessee ended up #20 in 2016.

But you're right, a lot of wins looked less impressive as the season progressed.

What's truly sad is that Mississippi state 2015 is a top 5 win (at the very least top 10) for our program since 2012 and we still have a losing record to them

2014, 15, and 16 all had common themes. Beat an overrated ranked team in the opener. Go on a 5-6 game win streak. Lose almost every single P5 game that follows the bye week.

That was where the Sumlin tenure crossed the proverbial Rubicon. That goddamn T-Knight injury/State loss.

That was game 2 of a 6 game P5 losing streak

Anyone else excited to watch Knight in the AAF? Hes playing for Arizona.

When he left I was quick to appreciate what he did (our best season since 1956) because I didn't want to be like FSU fans who bashed Jimbo for EVERYTHING wrong with their program.

But now that its a year out I feel like I can be more nuanced and dislike what sumlin didn't do with QBs.

But you’re talking about the man’s first year at the helm of a program that has had some real problems. 8-5 this year does not equal the 8-5’s of previous years, for multiple reasons.

8-5 would still be 8-5. Sorry but I'm not going to throw a parade for having one more win than last year. Again, I've seen some things I like but I'm not getting sucked into hype caused by slightly exceeding low expectations.

We went 11-2 with the talent we had in 2012 in spite of Sumlin. A real coach would have gone 13-1 or 14-0. All it took was not icing the kicker against Florida.

Without a good coach and some luck (USC game), this team would be 5-7 or 6-6 right now. Be glad we are 8-4.

He is doing a good job in recruiting so far. That's a long term rebuild that will take time due to Bert driving them into a lake with an anvil tied around their feet.

This is nothing but speculation with very little back it up. Whose to say had we not kept that staff together (remember we lost a ton of coaches fairly fast) that we don't keep rolling? The worst thing that could have happened to Sumlin was Tuberville suddenyl leaving Tech out of nowhere for Cincy opening up the HC job for Kingsbury. He is clearly a gifted play caller and has a way better feel for the game than any of the OCs we got after that under Sumlin.

Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know. I know that Sumlin never lost to USCe so I'm not sure how impressive beating them really is.

Did you watch that game? They dropped so many balls. We got lucky.

Dont get me wrong, 11-1 was possible this year and we shouldn't be satisfied with 2nd place. But all things considered, be happy we are 3 years removed from 2015 and everything is still standing. UCLA collapse was last season. And we have a top recruiting class. That's Jimbo.

That's all cool. But Sumlin recruited at a high level too. It is great that we are rated highly there? Yes. But I'm not going to do happy dances over kids who haven't played yet anymore. It's silly. Once they get onto the field and contribute (and more importantly develop) I'll care about who he did and didn't get.
