Texas A&M Aggies crowned most obnoxious fan base, barely beating UT

College football is back in Texas, as several major programs have their season opener this weekend and the fans are ready to cheer their teams on. But one fan base just got named No. 1 in a category they probably don't want to brag about.

The Texas A&M Aggies were named the "Most Obnoxious College Fan Base" by a new poll from Overton Insights/Texas Public Policy Foundation.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 24 to 26 among 1,167 likely voters in Texas and asked them to choose from the following seven schools —

Texas A&M

University of Texas

University of Houston

Texas Tech

Baylor University

Southern Methodist University

Texas Christian University

The poll showed that 29.7% of voters chose the Aggies, narrowly beating the Texas Longhorns at 27.4%.

The Houston Cougars came in at 11.2%, with the Texas Tech Red Raiders at 10.3%. Baylor, SMU and TCU rounded out the poll, with each earning less than 10% of the vote.

The poll also broke down the results by political alignment and philosophy — and, as in real politics, Republicans and Democrats don't agree.

Republicans say Texas Longhorns are the most obnoxious fan base, followed by the Aggies. Democrats say it's the other way around.

Liberal respondents are also A&M's harshest critics, with 48.2% naming the Aggies, more than double UT's 20.9%. Conservatives, by contrast, name UT at 33.4%, versus 19.1% for A&M.
