Texas A&M offensive lineman Matthew Wykoff intends on entering the NCAA transfer portal, he announced via Twitter on Wednesday morning. Wykoff was on the SEC All-Freshman team last season but will be leaving College Station.

“I will be entering my name into the transfer portal,” Wykoff said. “I am thankful for my time a(t) A&M and the coaching I have received. I will have 3 years of eligibility left.”

During his two seasons with the Aggies, Wykoff played in 16 total games. Four came during a redshirt year before seeing an increased role during the 2022 season. Wykoff made nine starts in 12 appearances, being a key part of the Texas A&M offensive line.

Wykoff played high school football at Magnolia (TX) High School, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 448 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Was he going to start for the Aggies this year? I suspect not.

He is listed behind Bryce Foster on the 2023 depth chart. Foster was injured last season, which is why Wykoff got the playing time. I would say he had a decent shot at starting this season.

Would he actually transfer to an SEC school? He would have to sit out next year

Why couldn't he transfer in conference? Does the SEC have a rule stating they can't transfer within the conference in the spring portal window?

Because the NCAA has no such restriction. And to add on, the NCAA moved the spring portal window up to April 15-30 from May 1-15 back in October, so get ready for another wild ride.

Yes, have to be in portal by Jan 18 to be eligible to play in SEC for Fall 2023 if you are currently at an SEC school. Dont think they've nixed this (yet)

Rule

Another important factor to consider is that the SEC office established rules for intraconference transfers. Undergraduates seeking immediate eligibility this season were required to enter the NCAA transfer portal by January 18th.

The current SEC rule would prohibit any spring portal entrant to play within the league during the 2023 college football season.

Havent heard of this changing, but maybe I missed it. This is from Jan of this year.

The only shot he has at starting was if Foster got hurt again. Spring Ball made that apparent to him, which is why he is transferring. Wykoff did an admirable job in a bad spot last year, but Foster is a star.

Thanks for the update. I hadn't been able to find this, so this was helpful.

Anyone else think it interesting that the conference is limiting intraconference transfers in this way? I'd love to find out if the SEC is the exception or the rule here.

the way i understood the SEC has always been a little harsher on intraconference tranfsers than everyone else. Weren't intraconference tranfers next to impossible at one point? or at least a huge burden on the player

Someone mentioned Wykoff announced too late to transfer in conference, I'm not sure if that's our rule or an NCAA.

Yes at one point but since the portal opened many have done it.

UF just got a OL from Bama a few months ago. I know we've sent a few to mizzou i remember Hopper specifically.

He's not the ideal size for a center. I wonder if he'll continue to play there or move down the line.

Its an SEC rule…like someone else said to be eligible for fall sports the player’s name has to be in the portal by the end of the first portal window….they don’t have to transfer during that window, but their name has to be in there.

Foster is back after missing last year with a knee injury and mono. Unfortunately, he does track in the spring, but he’s really good. He and Foster were also freshmen all sec.

Wycoff is a good player with experience. Redshirt sophomore. Wish him well.

I'm sure he's in demand but teams are still looking for transfers for this year so it might be a while

Didn't you see how the OL went and protected the quarterbacks last year with that lousy 5-7 record to show for?
