I just find it interesting that he made a comment right after it happened, then two days later we get this:
Scarbinsky: OK. Now what's his perspective on what happened?
"I don't have a perspective," he said.
Scarbinsky: Could Stevenson explain when Alabama asked Philon to grayshirt?
"I can't tell you that," the coach said.
Scarbinsky: But Philon is one of his players.
"It's not my child."
It's pretty obvious he was told not to talk to the media about this, or else....
If he had said something right after it happened like: "I'm not sure what was said to Philon, you'll have to ask Saban or his family," then I'm OK with that. The way it went down seems very very fishy.
As usual, Scabby's arse is late to the show. Scarb is always the last journalist to get up off his lazy arse and throw a piece together.

When they committed, did they committ as a grey shirt? That is the ?
Did they commit before they had season-ending injuries that required surgery or after? If you have a contract on a house and the toilet overflows and floods the house causing extensive damage to the kitchen, do you still have to buy the house? No.
Shitty situation. I wish it had been handled differently, and the kid was able to avoid what is obviously a humiliating experience. Sadly, this will become less shocking over the next few years, especially if a 4-year scholarship becomes a requirement.

another bama fan attacking the journalist to deflect from the issue.
This story could be written in crayon and it still tells the tale of a dick move.

It would be different if they were worth the two day wait, but they never are. He lets other reporters do all the hard work, blatantly rips them off, makes a few pseudo points and submits his piece.

I still don't see why a gray shirt was such a bad deal. Other than injured pride, it does not change how this year would have gone for him. Redshirt or grey shirt, he's still rehabbing and lifting for most of the year.
Well for one they have to pay their own way with a grey shirt. I dont know the kids financial situation but this is an issue with some. Or they just sit around till the spring. Either way they arent on the team till the spring. Id say that isnt a good deal whenever you were committed for a year to play on said team without getting hint of grey shirting. Just call a spade a spade. LSU fans did it with Elliot Porter. If you tell a kid very late that they are going to have to grey shirt its a pretty crappy thing to do. Much less right before signing day and on signing day.
The issue is not that CNS offered a grayshirt. The issue is the fact that the staff reassured these kids they had full offers until Taylor was told in January and Philon was told only about a week ahead of signing day.
Both kids committed before their injuries. If the injuries are the reason for the redshirt, just tell the kids they will receive a grayshirt offer. If they aren't satisfied with that, they can reopen their recruitment. The problem was the timing of the change in their status. The change was necessitated by the continued recruiting of athletes at their positions, and later committments that occurred after theirs were accepted which caused Alabama to be oversigned.
The rule change this year means ALA could only sign 26 LOIS. (1 backcounter) Philon and Taylor could not sign anything until next Jan.
Grayshirt status means you pay your own way, you are a part-time student, you cannot practice, attend team activities, or participate in strength and conditioning. You are not on the team as a grayshirt. You also aren't treated by team doctors. Grayshirt means you are on your own.
These kids both committed to schools they did not even visit. Why? Because of the situation they were put in by our staff.
Instead of talking about #1 recruiting class we are talking about 2 kids who were left at the alter by Saban. His quotes about committments do seem hypocritical under these circumstances.

Things changed with the 25 rule. If this was a year ago, Alabama would have signed Philon. Alabama will likely have 1-2 non-qualifiers in this bunch, but won't have anyone to take those spots this time around. That's the crux of the situation. I doubt we're at the 85 limit come August. More like 83 or 84.
Under the new rules everyone who signs a LOI counts against this class. I am sure that everyone who signs is going to make it. That is why Gladney did not sign.

We're talking about two kids because too many people are bleeding hearts and can't seem to realize how the world works. And because those people can't seem to come to grips that every kid had options and are still on Div 1 scholarship now. It's about hurt feelings. Pure and simple.

Come on. Even an Auburn fan should know that Scarbinsky is an awful "journalist".

Check back a few pages...i've never said he was a good journalist. But i am curious why this is the jumping off point for bama fans. Since he's a bad journalist saban is less of a dick for doing this?

Since SportsbyBrooks is a bad website, does it make his accusations any less valid? C'mon man.

He's wannabe Paul Finebaum. It's the same shite that Josh Moon was trying to peddle.

Well, I began the thread because I can't stand Scarbinsky. He's an embarrassment to those of us who write for a living. The Philon issue has been beat to death since signing day. Rather than bring anything new to the table, Scabs just collects a series of quotes and submits it as original.
I wish someone would actually get out there and research the subject thoroughly, but those journalists no longer reside in Birmingham. Scarbinsky is certainly not one of them. Of course, he is the only writer who will work for the pittance that the Birmingham news can afford to pay. I guess you can't blame him for mailing it in.
Too bad that in order to be a sports personality, you need to have personality.

At Bama the ends justify the means.

if sports by brooks is reporting factual information then it makes those facts no less daming just because his journalistic prowess is questionable at best.
Problem is he rarely reports facts.
