Disappointing. I really want this kid. I was hoping after his visit we'd get a little momentum.

Oh well. At least he's making Aggy play the game till signing day instead of us.

Excellent pull, Bammer

Not if it is an on the field coach. If Alabama had hired Freddie Roach as an analyst they would have to stop recruiting Jackson.

Roach is our new D-Line coach.

I’m not sure those rules apply at all to college coaches. Just high school coaches.

No because Roach was an Ole Miss coach, not his high school coach. He just liked Roach the most.

Assuming we land Jackson and that Burroughs is still a take/qualifies, here is what our scholarship DL looks like next year:

DE (7)
LaBryan Ray (rJr.)-5*
Phidarian Mathis (rJr.)-4*
Christian Barmore (rSo.)-4*
Byron Young (So.)-4*
Justin Eboigbe (So.)-4*
Braylen Ingraham (rFr.)-4*
Jah-Marien Latham (Fr.)-4*

DT/NG (6)
Stephon Wynn (rSo.)-4*
DJ Dale (So.)-4*
Ishmael Sopsher (rFr.)-4*
Tim Smith (Fr.)-4*
McKinley Jackson (Fr.)-4*
Jamil Burroughs (Fr.)-4*

We haven't had this number of quality DL since 14 and 15 when we would consistently rotate in 7-8 guys up front.

When everyone on your front is 18 or 19 years old it's not going to be a real good time - no matter what their upside is.

It's 10x easier to contribute in a significant way at "skill" positions or defending those skill positions than a position where physicality is first and foremost most important. Fact is there's very few 18/19 year olds who can handle SEC OL/DL play from a physicality standpoint.

(a) He played in the trenches? Must have missed that

(b) All his teammates on the back end were true freshmen too? Must have missed that as well

Yep - you can count on one hand the number of true freshmen who showed up and were very good on the inside of a defensive line as true freshmen. It's just not a transition that is easy to make.

Honestly, it might be the hardest transition in football now that QB has become "easier" for true freshmen. Offensive line and ILB also rank up there, but you still have 3-4 true freshmen OL (especially at tackle) every year who shine.

It's not a given our guys will magically be a ton better next year, but they certainly get a pass for basically playing all as a freshman class in the front 7 all year in the SEC. That's just not a fair ask of anybody.

It's absolutely the toughest position to play right away unless you have freakish physical strength (Daron Payne, Jacobian Guillory were/are accomplished powerlifters). With the offensive tackles, they're often tasked with blocking 230-250 pound players. If they get their hands on them they can hold their own. The interior linemen are going against grown men of equal or greater size with a head start in a college strength program and an upper hand in technique. True freshman just don't dominate 21 year old offensive guards and centers.

Look the frick out when they're forced to play anyway though and then their junior year rolls around
