The SEC doesn't need to expand anymore. I personally see no benefit in the conference getting bigger. We didn't get more money per team by adding Texas and OU... it just stayed the same. I don't see anyone else being able to increase what teams get if they couldn't.
Until adding teams actually gets more money for the existing teams, we'll stand pat.
Even if we did add teams, I'm not sure Clemson would be near the top. I honestly don't think the SEC needs more teams at the top. We need some middle tier teams in good markets who can help with all sports rather than being great in football. We honestly don't need any more of that.
So UNC or NCSU combined with UVA or VT is a much more interesting combo than adding another team from South Carolina or Florida.
Look to the big 10.

I generally pull for teams based on who I like more, not because of their conference.
For example, if UF were in the playoff I'd always hope they lost... because I hate UF. Same for GT. Same for Auburn.
Normally I'd pull against Clemson the same way, but Texas fans have become very annoying so I don't really care who wins that game.
I dislike UT fans, but I dislike OSU fans a bit more so I'm on board with cheering for Tennessee in their first game. I'll be all for Oregon in the second regardless of if they face OSU or Tennessee.
I cheer against ND... so go Indiana.
I'll go for the underdog if I don't care most of the time, so go SMU and go ASU against either Clemson or Texas.
When it comes to "conference talk" it's based on what actually happens. If Tennessee, Texas and UGA are all in the final 4 it won't be what I wanted... but it will still be a talking point about how tough the road in the SEC is.

I think it comes down to new arrivals hearing the "SEC" chant and thinking that meant the fanbases were in lockstep.
As I said, it's not about who we want to win. No Auburn fan wants Bama to win. No UF fan wants UGA to win.
It's about a recognition of how difficult it is for anyone to win in the conference, not what we're hoping will happen.
I may dislike Bama... but I recognize they'd be a tougher out than 3-5 teams that made the playoff this year (if not more).
Newcomers think we all want conference members to do well. That's just not true. We still hate each other for the most part.

I don’t like Dabo, and don’t have a dislike for Texas in any way…that said in the NIL world Texas is too dangerous and them winning only makes it worse. I have to pull for what is in LSUs best interest, and that is a Clemson win.
