Everyone only remembers that USC team and “how great they were” based off of one game against Oklahoma. That USC team beat a 6-6 UCLA team 29-24, a 7-5 Oregon State team 28-20, a 4-7 Stanford team 31-28, and the same VT team 24-13 at home (the score was 14-13 with 5 minutes left if the game until they finally put it away). So please tell me again about how dominant they were all year. You can argue all day who would win, but reality is it’s probably an even matchup and a great game regardless of the amount of “NFL” talent USC had.

Did you watch that game? VT was nowhere in the neighborhood of having a chance in that game.

Outgained y'all 25% and 35% more first downs.

No. Although Auburn was the SEC’s best team that year, USC was undoubtedly a superior TEAM. And even though I don't think Auburn would have gotten hosed by 36 (USC 55 - OU 19), the Trojans would have been a stone-cold lock to capture their second consecutive national championship.

Trolling two teams in one post. I like it!

close games with LSU (#5 in the nation)and Alabama
Bama blew that game early. First series went inside the 20, had a punt return inside the 15, and a pick inside the 15. Ended up having to kick two FGs and threw a pick at the goal line. Had no business being in the game. But, rivalries are what they are

Bama truly had no QB. Pennington was one of the worst.

Auburn had good players, but were not a dominant team.

Auburn maybe gets by OU in round one. USC almost certainly beats UTx very badly.

USC then beats down the winner of the AU/OU game.

USC 2004 was a power.

ETA: I do think they were 2nd best team in the country and deserved a shot.

Common mistake to look at where a player is drafted and not look at their career in the NFL. (minus injuries...) Auburn was better at almost every position from a talent perspective based on NFL careers. One offensive linemen and the LB are the main exceptions.

Some of this info is old, but it paints an accurate picture that USC got players drafted but they weren't that good.

2004 Auburn vs USCw (Who was more talented?)
The hype machine consistently made USCw out to be a NFL minor league team, but was it more show than substance?

*Contributing Players who played in the NFL from 2004 rosters
Auburn-24 (Silas Daniels 9 year career in CFL)
USCw-27

*Total NFL years Played Combine
Auburn-136 years
USCw-104 years

USCw had more players drafted but had less success and less longevity.

*Total Players Who Did Not Make it out of 3 year NFL Rookie Window
Auburn-5 players
USCw-14 players

This is the stat a person should look closely at...the eye test in college is crap. The NFL separates the men from the boys.

*Total NFL Pro Bowls
Auburn-8 Pro Bowls (1 Rookie of the Year)
USCw-9 Pro Bowls

*Total Players Still Active in NFL after 5 seasons
Auburn-11 players
USCw-5 players

Another clear statement that the USCw team of 2004 was all hat and no cattle.

Then of course there is the most important position QB...you couldn't find a single person who believed Jason was better than Matt in college in and around 2004. But he was...one can only wonder what Jason might have done if he'd of gone out west and played those weak teams each week.

frick yes. Time has shown we were more talented than USC. We sorta named our score vs everyone all year and only had 1 tough game all year.

Frankly about the least challenged SEC team ever.

Probably not, since they refused to play an AQ OOC opponent.

Who knows USC was pretty good. They would have obviously made the playoff.

Would've been tough to beat USC hell maybe OU with AP, those teams were pretty damn good top-down, Auburn would've had to employ the Parcells Super Bowl XXV approach to slow those teams down, its that simple

Only 2 that finished ranked in the top 10. #8 UGA and #10 VT.

Did I see someone post that AU 2004 was not a dominant team? They played one game all year that was less than a 14 point lead heading into the 4th qtr. The last impression was what hurts the 2004 AU and overinflates that USC team. Instead of dropping the hammer on a very good VT team, Tuberville went prevent and sat on a 16-0 lead late in the 4th qtr. People see the 16-13 score and think that it was a close game although it was never remotely in doubt. On the other hand, the only thing anyone remembers about that USC team is the beat down of OU and seem to forget they were very close to losing 4 games that year and needed a miracle rally to beat a 4 win Stanford team who had them down by 3 TDS. Moronically, people also equate the 2004 AU team with the Steve ensminger led offense that AU led on the field against SC in 2003. AU should absolutely claim that national championship and feel great about doing so. That team is one of the top 3 SEC teams of the last 20 years.

USC humiliated you the year before in your own stadium with a first time starting QB 23-0. And it was worse than the score indicated. USC would have scorched you again. That is one reason why the voters kept you out. They had seen that movie the year before in your own stadium, with mostly the same rosters. USC/OU/AU all undefeated. Frankly, none of the three played much of a schedule.

You lucked by LSU. A bad Bama team led you 6-0 at the half and lost by 8. Only one other SEC team finished in the top 10. You played a mediocre 3 loss VT team in your bowl and struggled to an ugly 16-13 win. They were the only ACC team who finished in the top 10 at number 10. You were a very good team but hardly a juggernaut.

As a die hard AU fan, I just don’t think our boys would have beat the NFLjr team of USC. Would AU have kept it close and not let them run all over the field like Oklahoma...yep.

But, that USC team was all world and with one of the most electric “guy with the ball in his hand” in Bush.

It would have been a 17-14 or 27-23 type game.

I hate to burst your bubble but LSU won the national championship in 03. They have the crystal football to prove it. Nice troll though.

No, just plain no...you don’t get to “claim” a national title just because you had a good season. If that were the case Alabama would have about 24 NCs..

NCs are awarded by nationally respected and acknowledged polls or by playing for it in the BCS and CFP eras. Auburn claiming anything other than a great season in 2004 iwould be akin to UCF, bless their hearts. In other words it would result in widespread snickering.

It would not have been that close. The same two teams played the previous year at Auburn with similar rosters and USC humiliated them 23-0 and it was far worse than the score indicated. USC was playing with a young QB making his first start. USC was a much better coached team on both sides of the ball. It's not NFL potential that matters, it's how good you play as a team in college, how well coached you are. USC would have drummed them again. A bad Bama team led this "juggernaut" 6-0 at the half, could have been worse, and lost 21-13. They lucked out a 1 pt win vs a 3 loss LSU team at home. AU had to convert a 4th and 12 on their final drive and score the game winner with ~ 1 min left. Tuberville said after the game, "The team that played the best probably didn't win." And stumbled and bumbled to a 16-13 win over a mediocre 3 loss VT team. Yeah, this team was invincible, one of the top SEC teams in the last 20 years. Bama, UF and LSU each have had 3-5 teams better than that one.

They were good but those USC teams were money in big games. They also crushed Auburn on the road the year before in Leinart's first career start.
