Ears Whitworth was bad but the program was already going into the crapper before he ever got there. Many of the problems that plagued the Whitworth years were extended from or caused by the final years of his predecessor, Harold Drew. And it almost immediately got better once Whitworth was gone. That's why I think Dubose was a far worse coach. He took a team that was one of the top ten programs in the nation at the beginning of 1997, a team that still had quite a bit of talent left over from the 10-win 1996 season, and promptly shite the bed with it. He went 4-7 in '97 and, if not for a few VERY lucky breaks in 1998, would have gone 4-7 once again. The 1999 team was probably the worst SEC champion of the modern era. To this day, I still scratch my head over how that team managed to win 10 games. And nothing more needs to be said about the 2000 season.
Dubose set the program back by TEN YEARS. Ten years of complete and total mediocrity. The damage Whitworth caused was rectified within months of his departure.

Fixed it
(but I concede your earlier point)

How was Billy Brewer the worst ever? He had us playing well.

Historically, ol' Ears wins it hands down.
But the all-time worst in the modern era is the only one with an .000 winning percentage as an SEC head coach (excluding interims, that is).

Bill Battle.
I doubt Dooley is given enough time to challenge that.

In my opinion anyone that does poorly at Bama has to be worse in comparison to the rest. Ok they don't HAVE to be but reasonably we can all agree it is 1,000 times easier to coach at Alabama than anywhere else. Before I get flamed this is actually a compliment to the program.

meh it was the 50's. who knows what the hell was happening
I only consider coaches who I have seen coach during my lifetime
so 1967 and on

Reasonable point.

Croom doesn't belong in this discussion, IMO
21-36 career record begs to differ.
Take away his one good year he was 13-31 (6-18) over 4 years. That's pretty freaking bad if you ask me.

Ears wins all time but in the modern era it is just 2
#1 Lane Kiffen - What coach stays at a good SEC school for 1 year
#2 Bill Curry - Setting a low bar at Kentucky takes real effort

He beat Clemson and got a bowl win
Scott had the misfortune of getting South Carolina as they entered the SEC.
