Worst SEC Champion since Championship game

Spinoff topic from worse division winner.
I can't think of many upsets in the Championship game. Maybe LSU 2001 would top that list. Still a great team not knocking them, but can't think of a bigger underdog winning it.
They were 5-3 in the regular season and had a couple of ugly home losses. Had they not upset Tennessee and ruined their chance at the NC that team would have been front and center in the other topic.
2005 UGA maybe needs to be there.

The last time an SEC champion didn’t at least play in the NC is 2005 UGA. WHOOPS Edit: 2014 Bama as well. Crazy. That UGA team really wasn’t that bad either. Shockley didn’t play vs UF and we still only lost by 4 when Tereshinski went 8-21 with an INT.
All losses were to ranked teams and by a cumulative 8 points.
2000 Florida has to be up there too.

1999 Alabama was a very average SEC champion. Lost to La Tech that season.

Bama beating Florida in 99 was a slight upset, though Bama had already beaten them once that season. I don't think anyone expected to throttle them like they did though.

2005 Georgia.
The loss to WVU in the Atlanta Sugar Bowl, loss to a meh Auburn team, and loss to a meh Florida team.

2005 UGA is the most correct answer, but 1994 Florida is another one. They were 2-2-1 against ranked opponents that year and lost their bowl game against FSU.

I disagree about that UF team. They were loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. They had a fluke loss to Miss St and like everyone in that time period couldn’t overcome FSU/Miami

Tereshinski should have been moved to LB

2013 Auburn
6 of their 8 regular season wins against Power 5 teams were 1 score games. Had 4 wins where they scored the game winning touchdown with 10, 80, 25, and 0 seconds remaining respectively. Very easily could have gone 8-4 or 7-5 that year

They lost 3 games by 8 combined points. It wasn’t an all-time team but probably not the worst.

They played a worn out LSU team who was playing their eleventh straight game because of Katrina. I told a buddy before the game that the Tigers’ tank was empty and to expect a loss.
99 Bama team barely got by vs Florida in the Swamp but destroyed UF in the SECCG but was not a great team. They needed a lucky call and a bad decision by Josh Booty to escape a loss vs a bad LSU team.

Yeah, 94 Florida was a solid team. A lot of Bama fans felt that 94 Bama team was better than the 92 Bama team. Florida in the SEC Championship Game was their only loss that season.

That team was good. The only losses were to Florida (Shockley was out) and Auburn (Shockley was still injured and could not run like normal).
They lost to WVU in the Sugar because the coaching staff was absolutely clueless on how to handle that spread offense. It was very innovative at the time.
And yet that team was one of the worst winners. That goes to show how good the SEC Champion usually is.
ETA: On a side note, I always wonder what could have been in the early Richt years if he had given Shockley the reigns over Greene after he saved us in the 2002 Clemson game. An experienced Shockley would have made our 2003 team a lot better because he wasn't a statue and the entire offensive line was new starters. Greene was a good game manager but Shockley could have been the difference making playmaker.

That 2001 SEC championship over Tennessee I thought we were on Top of the damn world and bought all kind of memories thinking you never know when you’ll get there again.
Glad to be wrong

Could have easily gone undefeated in the reg season. Fluke AU loss along with the JT III shite show in Jax.
The offense was as good as anyone in the country except Texas and USC.They also beat a one loss LSU team by 20.
Defense was an issue though.
