Interesting.
South Carolina:
President: Michael Amiridis: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and University of Wisconsin-Madison (AAU/Big Ten)
Provost: Donna Arnett: University of South Florida and University of North Carolina (AAU/ACC)

never said it had to be logical, but deny that this AAU shite matters to university presidents at your own demise. It's not all that matters, but it does matter to them.
It’s way overblown. Notre Dame and UGA not being AAU members has far less to do with them being in the Big Ten and more to do with the fact that neither school has a medical college (where the majority of research dollars go at AAU member schools).
AAU membership almost requires a medical college or a heavy STEM focus (I.e Ga Tech)

They don’t go to college to play school….

The Big Ten also shares a tremendous amount of research and academic funding between its members.
No, they don’t. The amount of federal grant money received by each school is the reason for its AAU status. They must individually deliver results specified by the grants. It isn’t free money that they can share.
BTW, membership in the AAU is by invitation, not qualification. Many southern schools qualify but will never be invited.
A side effect of the rise of the SEC to the top of the heap in college sports is an increased visibility at the academic level. Not all monies earned by football go back into the athletic department.
A lot of it is routed to academia. For example, as the SEC got richer, UK used $65 million of its share to build a new pharmacy research building. Other academic projects are underway from money donated by the athletic department.
This is one of the reasons that the competition between the SEC and Big Ten is so fierce. There is money to be made, billions of dollars of it. More than the athletic departments need. Money that will help the SEC schools compete with the Big Ten for federal research grants.
You need money to make money.

Do AAU member schools somehow stop getting AAU research money if they are not in an athletic conference with other AAU members?
This has been the most enjoyable response about the “all-important” AAU that I have seen.
UF would never leave the sec and the AAU status will remain for them if they do wait they are supposed to do.

Yep, all those big, fast, dumb lineman that graduate college and still can't read are definitely worried about if their school/employer is in the AAU

Yeah, this doesn't matter.
This x100.

Fascinating conversation. You can accurately gauge the intellectual level of the poster by his reaction to the topic, i.e., (t-shirt alumni): "it don't make a shite no how".
