The student body actually chose a horse. It was going to be called "Rebel." But that was too close to anything having to do with the Civil War. Because horses were used in the Civil War.
That's crazy. Bear seems random.

Probably around the same time Bama drops "Sweet Home Alabama" from their playlist...did you know the artist of that song had a confederate flag on their album covers????

Actually the student body was not given the chance to pick a mascot, as Colonel Reb was not allow to be an option or he would have been chosen.

it seems like Ole Miss fans would support this because they no doubt missed out on some good players over the years due to the Confederate imagery

It would seem to me that turning your back on you history and heritage because you missed out on some good football players isn't a win in the long run.

I don't think OM cared how many black bears actually lived in MS at the time of the name change. The name just makes sense because of the famous Teddy Roosevelt hunting story

why wouldn't you want to turn your back on the slavery and white supremacy heritage, especially given most football players are black.
the mascot was basically a white plantation owner.

This past fall the day after the Alabama Ole Miss game I saw an old black man on the Square with a Confederate flag and a sign that read "Don't only be a Rebel on gameday"

Everything isn't about slavery and white supremacy, although some try to make it seem that way.

I hope not. F*ck those pole smokers. Bring back Colonel Reb.

Since you list Clemson as your favorite team, let's look at a little Clemson historical fact.
Thomas Green Clemson, (July 1, 1807 – April 6, 1888) was an American politician and statesman, serving as an ambassador and the United States Superintendent of Agriculture. He served in the Confederate States Army. He founded Clemson University, located in South Carolina.
Clemson was started and named after a member of the Army of the Confederate States of America. I think Clemson should change their name as it may be offensive to some good football players. How PC do you want to go?

Because the story claims that the hunting trip happened close to Oxford. The name makes sense

Actually this took place in Onward, MS which is in the Mississippi Delta 60 miles south of Greenville.
Oxford is in the NW part of the state.

I do not know what the real intent of his appearance was to depict. pankReb thought he looked like a pedophile but he's kind of different

Most of us would have served in Confederate army back in the day if we lived during that time.
Nobody is saying ban history. But a white plantation owner as your mascot is a little weird.
Dr. Clemson is known for his interest in scientific research, not his racism, if he was a racist.
