The moment we drop that or "Ole Miss" is the moment I start sending my donations to State or LSU instead.

The administration has said we are the Ole Miss Rebels and they have no plans to change that. They still play Dixie at the games. The only thing they have dropped was the Col Reb mascot. Good God, I don't know why this is so hard. FYI, the confederate flag has been gone since 1997. That is almost 20 years ago.

Yes we should have gotten rid of the confederate flags
Yes we should have gotten rid of Colonel Reb

another term for the confederate flag is the "Rebel" flag. So:

Confederate flag = Col Reb = Rebel

I think it disingenuous to try to make Rebels mean something other than what it is. Rebels came before Col Reb and was actually a short lived mascot if you look at the history of the school. I am not saying that Ole Miss should dump the Rebels nickname but don't try to sell it as something that it's not. If you go back to the origin of Ole Miss becoming a Rebel, how do you tie to anything other than the rebels of the confederacy? Anyone know?

Not sure it was used; probably during the 80s

In the context of the history of the name rebels it's been in use since 36. We were the flood from 1893 until then. So the nickname has been in use far longer than the Col was official mascot.

Yes - well aware of that. Went to a bunch of OM games in the 70s with my Rebel Flag in tow. Col Reb the mascot came on the scene in the late 70s. Colonel Reb, the term, goes back to the 40s though and was the term for Mr Ole Miss - or whatever it is now.

things change. they sold rebel flags at walmart until this week. y'all had colonel reb as your mascot until a few years ago. seems like your president is very concerned with the perception of the state of Mississippi reflecting poorly on Ole Miss. If he, in the future, feels a change is needed, don't be shocked to see all of those things you listed disappear. I'd almost be willing to bet a lot of money dixie will no longer be played at games starting this football season, regardless of what he has or hasn't said to this point. It's stupid, but it's unfortunately the society we live in today.

There's already a push to get rid of the "Rebel" nickname for a Vestavia Hills high school.

Wow. The name Rebel is offensive now. Guess UNLV is next...people need to ask whey do they get a pass. Wonder what the response will be

Hell might as well be equal and go after the KU for using Jayhawk...that term is offensive to some Missourians considering the Jayhawkers murdered innocent people and committed crimes too.

Mizzou should just change from the Tigers to the Ruffians or the Quantrills. USCe can change to the Fightin' Preston Brooks.

Col Reb has been gone since 2003, that was 12 years ago. The confederate flag has been gone for almost 20 years. They have been gone for quite some time now. Ole Miss knew back in the 90s this was bringing the University down. The University has been thriving ever since. Dixie will still be played and we are still the Ole Miss Rebels no matter how many people say otherwise.

it makes no difference if it was 12 years or 5 years. fact still remains, they were once one thing, and now they're another. Missisippi voted to keep the battle flag within the state flag in the early 2000s too, and that is being revisited now. Things change is all I'm saying. Just because things have been stagnant for several years now doesn't mean they will NEVER change in the future.

The confederate flag can still be found in the Grove, in multiples, any gameday in Oxford. It isn't "gone".

And people will still criticize you for it, and rightly so.

if the president of the university is petitioning the state to change the state flag, you'd have to be extremely naive or just stubborn to believe he won't petition for the removal of dixie from being played at football games eventually.
