Most rational Auburn fans do appreciate Gus. That doesn't mean his tenure hadn't run its course.

Probably yeah now that you posted this shite thread

Everyone appreciates him
It blows my mind everyone doesn't understand where things had gotten to by the end of his tenure. By the time he had been fired, he was incapable of recruiting offensive linemen. He hadn't signed a 4* high school OT in I believe 4 years at that point.

What is there to appreciate?
Gus had 5 plays in his arsenal and couldn’t adjust once the defensive blueprint was laid on stopping his offense

Sure it is. We've had 3 coaches in a decade and 2 of them have basically had free reign to do as they wanted.
Our booster problem isn't that they meddle, it's that they choose poorly in the people they give the keys to.

Auburn is a good coach away from being great. Of course, in this day and age you can say that about any power four team willing to spend the money.

Auburn was a Top 3 power in the South from about 1897 through around 1919.
We were again a Top 3 power in the South from the mid 1950s through about 1963.
We were again a Top 3 power in the South through most of the 1980s
We had undefeated seasons in 1993, 2004, and won a national title in 2010. Played for another title in 2013. Were ranked #2 in the Playoff rankings going into the 2017 SEC title game.
Yes, despite 5 down years, we will absolutely be relevant again. History shows we will.

Gus looks like Knute Rockne in comparison to Freeze. That’s how rough it’s been

I love it when young whippersnappers who only discovered college football in the past 5 years start threads like this. Learn your SEC history, boy.
Go look at Alabama between Stallings and Saban, or even under Bear Bryant in the late 60s into the early 70/ when there was talk of firing him.
Go look at LSU in the 90s.
Go look at Auburn in the mid and late 70s.
Go look at Tennessee after Fulmer.
Florida when Spurrier left.
Georgia from 1980 to Smart.
All of the Big 6 programs have times when they’re down. These times can last years. But they always come back. They’re too big and have too much support and money not to.
And you should be thankful that they do. I say that because what makes the SEC special is that, unlike other conferences who have at best two historically power programs, the SEC has six, now eight with the addition of Texas & Oklahoma.

Gus is the only Auburn coach since 1924 not to have a losing season during his tenure at Auburn. Boozer Pitts went .500 in 1923 and 1924.
Since then every Auburn head coach has had at least one losing season except one - Gus Malzhan. All told, in the last 100 seasons Auburn had a losing record 27 times and went .500 an additional 8 times. Auburn only had a winning record 65% of the time. It is really not that surprising that they have been posting losing records this decade.

How are y’all not built for the NiL era?
Your last national title was NiL driven (aka players getting paid) before NiL was a thing

Why worry about winning when you can just announce fake natties. Allbarn has tarnished college football by doing that. And karma is biting them in the arse.
Same happened to OSU Pokes. They claimed one that Army won and now they are the worst team in football. Fired their best coach ever. Karma isn’t done with Allbarn yet.

Who cares? 7-6 certainly isnt a good season and he could definitely accomplish 5 and 6 loss seasons on the regular.

Will Auburn ever return to relevancy?

My confidence that we will return to relevance is at an all-time low. I look at Nebraska under Scott Frost who kept coming close and they fired him. Now they are completely inconsequential. Feels like where we are headed (if we’re not already there) I’m not sure we’re cut out for the NIL portal era.
I was thinking more like Tennessee. Harsin was your Dooley. Now you’re in the Pruitt phase.
