No, but I know a coach that got offended that a Les Mile's offense dropped 45 on him.

He was probably thinking 'I wish we had Mathieu.'

Miles is not some football revolutionary that is changing the game, so let's not give him undue credit. He had some great defensive players last year.

LSU played "old school" because they didn't have a QB. If Andrew Luck was on the roster or RG3, then they wouldn't have played the same style.

If I were LSU I would do it again this year. I'm not sold on Mett at all.

Re-post from BOL

Sportsman’s club dinner in Austin, TX (August 2011)No great speakers or stories of note like last year (see below) but one overarching theme that would have annoyed me if I were a Longhorn, but amused me as a Bama fan. The whole evening seemed like an infomercial for the SEC. There were three assistant coaches on hand: Applewhite, Harsin, and Diaz. As Mack introduced Applewhite he reminded us of his prior tour at Bama and as he introduced Diaz he mentioned his background at State. When he spoke about the new additions not in attendance he talked about Searels coming from Georgia (and LSU at one point I think) and Bo Davis coming from Bama and LSU under Saban. He talked about Bennie Wylie who he had just hired from the little orange as well. After all this he raised an eyebrow to the crowd and asked if anyone was spotting a theme. He then spent some time discussing how they were building an SEC style team in Austin centered on toughness and the line of scrimmage. Basically when the assistant coaches spoke they reiterated this, especially Diaz, who spent a lot of time on what it takes to play defense in the SEC. I found the whole theme a bit strange and if I were a Longhorn fan I think I would have been a bit insulted… alas thank goodness I am not, and of course they didn’t say anything that isn’t true.

Someone asked if he had something special planned for LSU. He smiled, and said "well I know you can all read lips."

He's a damn fool. He had no reason to be mad. He runs up the score on everyone every chance he gets.

We probably will. If Mett is consistent, doesn't force errors, manages the team well, can make fast decisions, and can make the occasional big play, LSU is almost unbeatable.

But, all of that is harder than it sounds. We will see.

Going on 8 years in and Miles still gets none of the credit for the wins but all of the blame for the losses. Amazing.

There are 3 major phases of each team and more times than not, one is overlooked by even the best of coaches. Miles and Saban, both, emphasize Special teams.

I constantly read other team's fans talk smack about Les Miles. But, LSU's special teams, are usually at the top year in and year out. Miles actually goes out and puts a premium on recruiting punters, kickers, and deep snappers. Miles and Saban, both, usually play a lot of their best players on special teams too.

Recruiting, Defense and Special teams. This is where LSU and Bama separate themselves from some of the other teams.

I said lets not give him undue credit. Yes, Miles is a good coach but the op was implying that other coaches in the SEC might start emulating him and I disagree with that entirely.

The OP also thinks winning on the lines is a new strategy

Alabama and LSU used the same formula this past year. Alabama has used it for most of the last 65 years. Last season LSU was better at the formula than Alabama was for most of the season.

Load the defense with top talent. Use that talent and special teams play to limit the field. Play the game on the other team's side of the 50 yard line. Do not make mistakes on offense that would take the game away from the defense. Force the other team into mistakes and bludgeon them with power when the mistakes happen.

As long as LSU and Alabama have the athletes to beat you down with that type of defense, they will likely keep doing it. When they can add special athletes on the offense they can also step beyond using the o-line to control the clock so the other team has limited chances to cross the 50.

Old school still works pretty well.

No I don't. I've watched football for more than 5 minutes. I think that Alabama and LSU place a premium on line play more than other schools do, though. Their overall style is different than say, Oregon.

Maybe they are just better at it.

It also seems as though neither team thinks that the QB is the most important position on the field, but that it is a team game.

This had a lot to do with the dominance. Florida, Tennessee and Auburn all had down seasons. Last year's UGA team wouldn't have sniffed ten wins in a regular year for the SEC and I personally think Arkansas and South Carolina both had much better teams in 2010 than they had in 2011 even though they finished higher in the rankings in 2011. Also Ole Miss and Kentucky were two of the worst SEC football teams not named Vandy that I've seen in recent years.

Why Were Bama & LSU So Much Better Last Year?

Bama has been running the same 'formula' since the 30s. Most times it works, sometimes it doesn't.

You think Bama and LSU having a good year is gonna make other seasoned coaches rethink their philosophies? Seriously?

I doubt any coach worth a shite is thinking to himself 'if only I could be a coach like Les Miles.'

Ahh, I see. At least our coach doesn't mouth the words "F---------ck Y------u Y-----u M------r
F------r" for all the world to see on national television - because he has the absolutely BIZARRE thought that Miles was 'running up the score' by kicking a field goal ??????????????
Oh my f-----g God!! What an absolute pulsating, vibrating female orifice !!!
WTF was Miles SUPPOSED to do? Go for it on 4th down and go for a TD to make it 45-17 instead of 41-17 ?????????????????????????????
How fricking STUPID is that ??????????????

Maybe, but we KNOW they aren't thinking that to themselves about Petrino.

yes but Oregon has to adjust due to the talent they are able to recruit. For the most part the stud dline talent is/stays in the south.

The formula has always been the same.
