Tennessee and LSU had more talent than A&M and Arkansas for starters, he might have been ahead of his time back in 90s and 00s, but then fell behind ultimately as teams offense changed in the 10s. His biggest issue always was he couldn't recruit worth a shite. He left Tennessee and LSU in awful situations at LB IIRC. You basically cant afford to have him on staff for more than 4 years or you'll be depleted on the D somewhere...or just understand you have to pick up every recruiting slack for him because he wont go out and do it.

DC's have to recruit their own players now of days...and he sucks at that.

The weird thing is at Tennessee he was known to have linebackers less than 220 pounds
That changed a little after the '97 Nebraska game... before that game, he was focused on speed first. After that game, he realized that if the OL is big enough, they could enforce their will on him.
That being said, you are right...some of his most successful linebackers were converted and bulked up Safeties. Al Wilson is the best example of this.

i would actually say lsu got their asses kicked by bama so many years in a row is because our linebacker corps was so small. We put defensive ends at defensive tackle and had safeties at linebacker. Bama wrecked us physically
It’s so nice to have real linebackers again. That dude was obsessed with the 205 lb MLB. And don’t get me started on DJ Welter.

Remember when they kept Beckwith on the bench in favor of DJ? Just one of the many mind-numbing decisions of the late Miles era.

It is not just that he is lazy at recruiting and past his prime when it comes to adapting to new offensive schemes.
I think what ultimately did him in is that coaches have seen so much film on Chavis and his defense that they know what he is going to call in a given situation before he does.
With the rise of the glance over to the sidelines offense he's doomed unless he has ridiculous talent to use.

Easy money: Players
At bad programs that don't get good defensive players he can't cut it
No disrespect to him, it's not like he forgot how to coach...no DC will be good with Arkansas-level talent (and Sumlin-level defensive talent at A&M)

Ultimately it’s the head coach responsibility to make sure the defensive system in place and the players you recruit to that system mesh together
Miles was too busy meddling in offense and recruiting awful qbs while staying away from defense
Chavis and Haley were terrible at recruiting
Thank god for Raymond as dbu never fell off
It took o coming in to fix the dline and Aranda was very good with the lbs

I’d say he’s still above average. It has so much to do with players and the ever changing game. He’s evolved, but maybe not quick enough. He also went from a huge talent advantage to avg then we’ll below average talent.

Because he went to A&M a graveyard for coaching careers. Sumlin and Franchione were fast risers and home run hires. They killed their career going there. Jimbo will join soon. At least he will have a lot of cash. Good for him.

That changed a little after the '97 Nebraska game..
If my old mind remembers correctly in the 2nd half or 4th quarter of that Nebraska game the Cornhuskers went on TD scoring drives of 92 and 94 yards and didn't throw a pass in either drive.....Our DL and backers looked like they were wearing roller skates.

he was successful when he had great programs and recruiters getting him elite talent. He cant get or develop any talent himself.

Happened after the 94 Citrus Bowl against Penn State to.
Nebraska is a different animal though, those kids were on a 6 year steroid program.

Shocking!
It's a thread with a title including the word average and it involves a coach that worked there.
Yeah shocking.

The game changed, he did not.
This. Spread O's made what he did obsolete. It happens. Monte Kiffin is a prime example. Chief is a HOF. The game has just passed him by.

Chavis also had a habit of not getting along with hot shot recruiters he worked with at UT...Rodney Gardner being one of them..
