It's pretty weird but seems to just be a thing with older sidewalkers. No one talked about him when I was there 05-07.

Best thing about it - they had to wait until he was dead to roll so hardcore with it.

We had Garth Brooks actually playing 'Calling Baton Rouge' in Tiger Stadium less than 6 months ago.

He never attended UF, didn’t seem to care for sports that much, left Gainesville as soon as possible to pursue a music career in Los Angeles, and UF fans are spinning a nutty, delusional narrative that he was some Florida football superfan and have turned him into the face of their program. If you Google “Tom Petty UF”, basically every result is their fanbase trying to justify the fact that they have a bizarre obsession and forced association with him by twisting reality and writing about how he REALLY did love Florida even though everyone has said the opposite for 20+ years.

It comes across as a weird and pathetic attempt at bringing some culture to the least cultured town in the SEC East.

Its exactly what this is, and thats why we just started hearing about it last season or so. Its all invented.

I feel like it started as something "no big deal" and then ESPN needed something to talk about to pump up an unranked Florida game and made it into something bigger than anyone intended.

He was born and raised in Gainesville… it’s not that weird. I mean it’s not like he grew up and left town to play for another school like all the famous people from Baton Rouge.

Bama's band performing Tusk makes less sense IMO...and they stole it from USC

Look, I hate bama as much as the next guy but their mascot is an elephant so I'll give them a pass on playing Tusk.

I don’t see why Tom should be disparaged, he had some good songs.

No, I am not referring to the two-bits guy; the young guy in during game breaks.

Didn’t Fleetwood Mac actually do the video and incorporate USC’s spirit of Troy. Like they played the percussion for the official soundtrack?

The announcers being force fed lines about it being the newest hot college tradition was so transparent. It’s cheesy as frick

Delete, misread post

(Thought was about Mr. Two Bits. Have no clue, genuinely, what “young guy” they’re referring to)

I don't have a problem with it. Dixieland Delight has to do with being in Tennessee, yet we claim it for some reason.

Probably has to do with it being one of the biggest hits from a band named.....

Wait for it....

Doesn’t matter who performs it. It is a song about Tennessee, written by a Tennessean.

You cut that snippet out but the whole article is about how the connection is exaggerated. The reality is Petty never set foot at a Florida sporting event.
