He may be an upgrade for Ol'Miss. He can draw it up on the boads but his defense didn't do thethingds a guy thast doesn't know what asparagus even is.......well ...turn loose youe athletes, goshdamit.

Because he kept taking the best pass rusher in the country and dropping him into coverage.

I’m the same way. I wonder why we hired that guy. I’ve heard Ole Miss people get pumped about having him. I am not at all. But there is always hope. Hope I’m wrong on this one.

Saban in 10 seasons with Kirby or Pruitt as DC: National titles 5, top 5 scoring defense 8 times.
Saban in 16 seasons without Kirby/Pruitt: National titles 2 (1* at bama, 1 at LSU), top 5 scoring defense 1 time (at LSU)?

He was not THE key, but he was A key. We have won a further two national championships and have made another three appearances in the CFP National Championship Game since he departed in early 2016.
The key is and always will be Nick Saban. However, he is a human being and therefore is prone to making mistakes. Pete Golding was a mistake.

That and putting a safety, Hellmans, to cover Hyatt in the Tenn game and wondering why he couldn't. Even an 8 year old knows a safety can't cover a speedy WR.

Bryce had his moments at Bama but became wildly inconsistent last season BUT to defend him way too much was put on his shoulders. Bama didn't even try to run the ball and let's be honest, Gibbs wasn't a typical Bama back.
Also, and this is the bigger point. Offense lends to defense. Coach after coach after coach has said that up tempo, high octane offense puts so much pressure on you defense that its impossible to even be good most of the time. Your offense is scoring fast and putting your defense back out there or they go 3 and out and put the defense back out there. Giving your defense a 2:30 rest vs a 6 minute rest is huge. Golding wasn't as bad as most said but he was so complex and Bama spent so little time in practice on defense as compared to other seasons that the players were exhausted and confused. Look at game after game where Bama's D was OWNED in the 4th qtr last year from playing 80,90 plays. Where Saban shoud get the blame was changing what wasn't broken with his offense. Bama gave up 3 long TD's to UT by not being lined up correctly and gave up a 25 yd TD run to LSU's QB by having 6 guys covering 2 on the wrong side of the field due to misalignment. Golding is really going to struggle at Ole Miss but again, most won't be his fault. Lane's style may be the worst in helping out his defense.

I get it, but it takes time for a program to slow down. I mean, a coordinator leaves and they don't just lay down a die.
Personally, I think Saban probably takes a young DC and takes them by the hand and guides them along until thye have a firm grasp. As long as Kirby was DC there, I suspect he had full reign of the defense.

He is the spark plug, no doubt. He pushes the coordinators and motivates them to work harder and succeed. That said, as we get older a bit of that fire leaves us. I honestly do believe that is at least a small part of what is going on with Saban.

So did Jeremy Pruitt. And his style was much more simple and aggressive than Smart's. Which has BAMA fans still longing for 2017.
Golding also coached ILBers and you will see a huge improvement in the middle of our defense this season.

Any offense with a pulse could move the ball on Bama. Way too much of dropping off the linebackers into coverage and no pressure on the QB. The thing that was sickening to watch is that he allowed Tennessee to drop 60 points on us. Who does that?

Golding has done a good job on the recruiting side. Of course, we'll find out what he's able to do on the field over the course of the next few months.

4 and 5-star defensive athletes look just like 2 and 3-star athletes when you are a half step behind and playing on your heels. Adjust accordingly.
