Why Does Everyone think Archie Manning was an Elite College QB

Based on these statistics. The answer is no
Archie Manning — Ole Miss career
From 1968–1970, Archie Manning started 28 games for Ole Miss.
* Passing: 402 completions on 761 attempts
* Completion percentage: 52.8%
* Passing yards: 4,753
* Passing TDs: 31
* Interceptions: 40
* Rushing: roughly 1,000 yards
* Rushing TDs: 20+

Look at other QBs from that era.
Joe Namath, super bowl winning QB and won a NC:
Started 33 games, throwing for 2713 yards and 25 TD and 19 intereceptions.
203 completed on 374 attempts, 54.2%
655 rushing yards
Kenny Stabler, won a NC and the super bowl.
30 games, 2196 yards, 18 TD, 18 INT, 180 completions on 303 attempts for 59.4% completed.
838 yards and 9 TD rushing.
The rules have changed to benefit the offenses. Back in those days, it was much tougher for offenses.

Because having a QB that could pass and run like he did was revolutionary at the time.
He had the single game total yardage record for an SEC player until Johnny Manziel broke it in 2012 or 2013. Not even Cam Newton or Tebow could break that record. And he was doing that in the late 60s early 70s.
He also played a few games with a broken damn arm in a cast.
You probably think he was a terrible NFL QB too without knowing just how horrific those Saints teams were when he played for them. There’s a reason he’s a legend in Louisiana because Saints fans know he got a raw deal playing on those teams his whole career but he never complained and busted his arse.

You probably think he was a terrible NFL QB too without knowing just how horrific those Saints teams were when he played for them. I saw him play. He was an elite college quarterback. The rules and the game were different then, stats are not the only standard to determine greatness.

Were you around to see him play? Do you know how different stats were back in those times. Do you realize that he only played three years? He carried Ole Miss in those years as Vaught's program had passed its peak by then. I watched him single-handedly defeat one of the best LSU teams of all time and give them their only loss.
Archie was an elite athlete. Offenses weren't as wide open in those days. Defense ruled the day.

People who aren't old enough to have seen Archie Manning just look at stats and don't understand that a 50% passer was good back then.
Archie was probably the first guy in CFB history who was known to be a great passing QB... a great running QB AND a great "scrambler"...
"Scrambling" back then.... was the word they used for QBs who could avoid pass rushers and not get "sacked"... which was just becoming a word back then.
Archie was great at all of that... and was obviously a great team leader for Ole Miss.

10 game regular season. Rules encouraged the run game more than the passing game of today. O-Line had to have hands within their body and could not extend arms while blocking. Defenses could mug receivers at the line for as long as they could until ball thrown, etc.
His numbers are very good for the times.
Blocking technique used in 60s because rules were different and enforced. Holding was 15 yards back then.

He actually played in the Gator Bowl against Auburn with the cast.
Imagine a high profile QB in SEC playing in a bowl game- not a playoff game- in 2026.
Archie was a big CFB hero.

Well before my time but I remember my dad always saying he was the best Manning QB and that the Saints were just the worst team ever assembled.
Still find it very hard to believe he was even close to Peyton.

Michael Vick stats 2 years at vir tech 56.5 comp rate, 3074 yards passing, 20 tds to 11 ints, rushing 1202 yards 16 tds.
Jaxson Dart was 67.3%, 7,643 yards passing, 52 tds to 11ints, 884 yards rushing and 11 tds.
Why make a big deal over Michael Vick?

He’d probably be very good if you time traveled him into the modern era. Offensive schemes back then weren’t QB friendly

I guess we are not putting him through 1000s of hours of camps and training like they do for kids these days while we are at it. I'm sure they would look at a tall, remarkably athletic teen and tell him to join the chess club instead. He would just have to go to MLB where he was drafted multiple times.
