You can't look at statistics unless you look at the era they played in.
In 1969 and 1970 he was named to the all SEC team.
He was 4th in Heisman voting in 1969 and 3rd in 1970.
He was inducted into the College Football HoF
He was named the SEC Quarterback of the Quarter Century (1950–75) by several publications.
But, hey. Statistics and your opinion probably trumps the experts. I am guessing you never saw him play.

Because he was and Elite College QB. He was Tebow before Tebow. The man had unbelievable scrambling ability. Ole Miss lost two games in 1969 by one point each. At the end of the year they were playing as well as anyone in the country. They beat SEC Champion Tennessee 38-0 in mid November.
He did heave some interceptions but a lot were in 1968, his soph year.

I don’t even consider Tarkenton and Manning in the same era. Manning was Fran but bigger faster stronger and a better thrower.

Almost everyone I’ve ever talked to that actually watched him play rates him as elite. Even compared with most modern QBs. I’ll take their word for it.

You clearly never watched Archie play. LSU fan here. Watch the 11/1/69 Ole Miss 26-23 victory over LSU and then try to say the words you wrote. Better yet, watch the 10/4/69 Alabama 33-32 win over Ole Miss. You want statistics? Not counting their game against Ole Miss, Alabama gave up 189 yds/gm passing; Archie threw for 436 on them. He also rushed for 104 yds. Ole Miss had 609 yds Total Offense; Alabama gave up 350 yds/gm to their other 9 regular season opponents. There are your statistics.

I’m old enough to have seen Archie play,he was a great college QB.He was very elusive and hard to defend.Had he been drafted by a competent NFL organization that knew how to build a team ,like Dallas,LA.RAMS etc. he would have been a hall of fame.The Saints under John Mecom was a clown show and he still put up some good numbers.

Archie was really fast. I saw him get a double on a bunt vs Vandy. He bunted up the 1B line. 2B came over to cover 1st. SS did not immediately cover 2nd, and Archie rounded first and went straight to 2nd. He then stole 3rd and came home on a routine grounder.
I think he still holds the Ole Miss record for triples. He led Ole Miss to the 1969 CWS and was drafted by MLB 4 times.
