The same thing USCe has always played for... much of nothing.

Look, college football is different than it was 20 years ago. Obvious right?

What I'm driving at is this whole playoff system took all the charm out of it.

Realistically you can't make the playoff if you are NOT in a P5 conference (or are Notre Dame).

And among the P5 schools, only a select few have the recruiting base (however they do it) to actually put together teams that could actually win the two playoff games it takes.

Once upon a time a team like Kansas State could upset Oklahoma, and make the Orange Bowl.

That's not possible anymore. For a number of reasons (see Oklahoma State from a few years ago as an example). I mean they will take a one loss Alabama team over say a Big 12 team not named Oklahoma in a heartbeat, even if that had only one loss, same as Bama.

So what are the rest of us playing for?

I could put up a list of "Tier One" schools that in my estimation have the recruiting base to contend regularly. That's been done plenty though.

What got me though was watching the game yesterday and an announcer casually mentioning Georgia had like seven 5 Stars in their upcoming recruiting class.

Now sure Georgia has a great situation, but there are a handful of other teams that could do the same across the country.

But whatever he is as a gameday coach, Muschamp is basically either the best or close to it recruiter we have ever had at South Carolina.

And there is no way in hell he will ever sign that kind of class here.

It's not even fun to watch really. You seldom see different kinds of offenses anymore. The playcalling really doesn't matter. You just trot out your players and if you have more talent you just overwhelm the other team.

So why are we bothering anymore? There's no such thing as a loss you enjoy watching, at least anymore. There is only winning. And if you are playing a small school there is only winning by annihiliating them, so you can impress pollsters - and people on boards like this.

Just doesn't seem very fun anymore. And they continually keep raising the price of everything associated with college football so the school can build more stupid shite like "football operations centers," or "learning centers."

Or paying former players to scrimmage against the team.

Not trying to convert anyone to my way of thinking, but I remember when I was a big football fan. I'd be so happy when I could watch a team like Vanderbilt under Watson Brown run that ball control passing attack against Tennessee or something.

Now it's all just an endless expanse of spread teams, with a very occasional Air Raid team, or an oddball pro set team. Or a service academy or Tech running an opton attack.

No way in hell some crackerjack playcaller with an innovative system could beat a team like Alabama these days.

Now what we have is a proving ground of sorts, where the regular season is all about deciding which four of Alabama, Ohio State, or the like actually make the playoff.

Just kind of meh to me now.

I was actually rooting for SC to win the rest of their games. I guess I should give up on that.

College football used to be a larger version of high school football. You worried about the local. Now it's a smaller version of the NFL.

Tell us about the recruiting base advantages that Clemson has over South Carolina.

THIS Dawgfanman

I would really like to see a huge surprise element like playing all the bowls out and then picking the best 4. Get this "committee" and all the politics out of this sport.

As for OP: Lots of people must feel the way you do as attendance is down across the board so people are voting with their wallets it seems. Part of this could be that the economy is not as good as we are being fist fed that it is. When people start feeling that things are rigged for the big boys, they walk away. The stock market is a prime example. Volume has been at historic lows the last several years. The world is changing quickly and people are waking up to just how rigged most things are now.

Right on OP. I have talked about this for years, I call it the caste system of college football.

That is why I don’t like the argument that paying Jimbo so much is bad for the sport. This frontrunning sport can go frick itself, if we can buy our way into a higher caste this is America it should happen.

What ruins football is the same programs getting a benefit of the doubt because “college football is better when _______ is good.”

I honestly agree. Bowl season was so much more exciting when there wasn't a playoff. This isn't about having a clear National Champ to me. It is about having less value in all the other bowls as a result.

Apparently you do not remember Utah smacking Alabama in the Sugar Bowl or Boise State with the Statue of Liberty to beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta bowl.

South Carolina's problem is they play in the SEC, and their three good years were at a time when a conference could put only two teams in BCS games. Win ten games and be runner up in the east and you will find yourself playing on New Year's Day in the Peach Bowl against TCU.

Totally agree with the OP. The BCS system was much better for so many reasons. A tournament style playoff system just doesn't work for CFB. Alabama is honestly better off intentionally losing to Auburn and not having to play in the SECCG. Stay at home and rest up for the guaranteed playoff spot.

The biggest one is the fact you have several games with big name North Carolina schools every year.

We seem to try and schedule a game with a North Carolina team every year, but it doesn't always happen.

Really it'd be more useful for us to not have Clemson on the schedule, and have North Carolina as a permanent rival.

Recruiting wise (and that is pretty much the only thing now), you don't do anything for us.

Of course Clemson can say the same thing.

Ah, I see you are a Tide Fan. Just pretend you are a Clemson fan for this psot.

Yesterdays events broke the spirit of South Carolina football for the foreseeable future.

Things will never be quite the same.

lulz ... nice troll, shiney hook, but no.

Sunbeam is a sweetheart but she hasn't a clue about a warrior mentality. Few do who live vicariously through football teams because society has dictated to us that these are the only acceptable outlets for warrior type violence in our lives.

Soldiers, especially those who belong-to and fight with elite units .... they get it, we got it, some around here will understand.

Ball players understand that warrior mentality, especially football players, because it too is violent and requires a great deal of sacrifice and bravery and courage to survive.

Most fans in the stands are cuck pussies.

SC's young men are not the least bit broken ... and neither are the diehard fans who have experienced some sort of team type warrior period in their lives.

Honestly, dueling should be brought back ... a lot of the cuck talk and social media bravo sierra would be brought to a halt.

In the meantime, SC will overcome this in short order.

The reason you keep fighting? Hell, that's easy.

Imagine if David had been a pussy and not stepped up to the plate and beaned Goliath in the nugget with that rock.

Imagine if Spartacus had not said enough is enough and rose-up against Rome ... he died a free man.

Imagine if Perseus had not overcome overwhelming odds to defeat The Kraken.

Imagine if Rocky had pussied-out against Ivan Drago ... instead, he kicked that Russian's arse.

That's why we bother by gosh, that's why warriors take the field no matter what and that's why you keep working hard and recruiting and working hard and recruiting. I guarantee you there are kids out there that want to be a part of the hard charging underdogs ... that's how heros are born.

Warriors understand and even fans who may not understand the warrior mentality - they still understand the hero part of this game.

That's why we bother to support them. And they do it for the spotlight and for their brothers who fight beside them.

But I get it .... women don't understand the alpha male warrior mentality, they just know they want to bang alpha male warrior types.

Some of you mizzourites probably don't understand that ... we get it, we've figured y'all out. So yeah, Mizzou would probably break after suffering a defeat like we did yesterday. But we're Fighting Damn Gamecocks baby and we get the frick up and get ready for the next fight.

BTW Mizzou, remind me. After we came into y'all's house and mudholed y'all last year ... y'all kinda folded after that huh.

lulz ... yeah you did.

It really is a shame that Texas deep sixed the Big XII, because Mizzou is going to regret the move forever. 2013-14 were flukes. It pains me to say this.

The playoff will expand soon. And CFB is about matchups and bragging rights. Not who wins the Championship

You guys never won anything of any significance in the old days when the bowls and polls decided champs.

You guys never won anything in the BCS era.

You guys haven't won't anything in the playoff era.
