Look, college football is different than it was 20 years ago. Obvious right?

What I'm driving at is this whole playoff system took all the charm out of it.

Realistically you can't make the playoff if you are NOT in a P5 conference (or are Notre Dame).

And among the P5 schools, only a select few have the recruiting base (however they do it) to actually put together teams that could actually win the two playoff games it takes.

Once upon a time a team like Kansas State could upset Oklahoma, and make the Orange Bowl.

That's not possible anymore. For a number of reasons (see Oklahoma State from a few years ago as an example). I mean they will take a one loss Alabama team over say a Big 12 team not named Oklahoma in a heartbeat, even if that had only one loss, same as Bama.

So what are the rest of us playing for?

I could put up a list of "Tier One" schools that in my estimation have the recruiting base to contend regularly. That's been done plenty though.

What got me though was watching the game yesterday and an announcer casually mentioning Georgia had like seven 5 Stars in their upcoming recruiting class.

Now sure Georgia has a great situation, but there are a handful of other teams that could do the same across the country.

But whatever he is as a gameday coach, Muschamp is basically either the best or close to it recruiter we have ever had at South Carolina.

And there is no way in hell he will ever sign that kind of class here.

It's not even fun to watch really. You seldom see different kinds of offenses anymore. The playcalling really doesn't matter. You just trot out your players and if you have more talent you just overwhelm the other team.

So why are we bothering anymore? There's no such thing as a loss you enjoy watching, at least anymore. There is only winning. And if you are playing a small school there is only winning by annihiliating them, so you can impress pollsters - and people on boards like this.

Just doesn't seem very fun anymore. And they continually keep raising the price of everything associated with college football so the school can build more stupid shite like "football operations centers," or "learning centers."

Or paying former players to scrimmage against the team.

Not trying to convert anyone to my way of thinking, but I remember when I was a big football fan. I'd be so happy when I could watch a team like Vanderbilt under Watson Brown run that ball control passing attack against Tennessee or something.

Now it's all just an endless expanse of spread teams, with a very occasional Air Raid team, or an oddball pro set team. Or a service academy or Tech running an opton attack.

No way in hell some crackerjack playcaller with an innovative system could beat a team like Alabama these days.

Now what we have is a proving ground of sorts, where the regular season is all about deciding which four of Alabama, Ohio State, or the like actually make the playoff.

Just kind of meh to me now.

I said this last night, but it was more fun following the Gamecocks in 1998 and 1999 when we lost 21 straight than it is now when we're an 8-4 team.

Yesterdays events broke the spirit of South Carolina football for the foreseeable future.

Things will never be quite the same.

I said this in a post earlier last week and got blasted for it but it's true none the less. At least 3 of the spots are already taken. And that's the way it is every year it's going to get worse.

There are among 6 to 8 teams that will make the playoffs every year. Bama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, Oklahoma, maybe someone from the Pac 12. Bama and Georgia play such a joke schedule that they are virtually assured a spot.

There are a few teams that every now and then may find the magic depending on their schedule. Auburn, A&M, FSU, TX, VaTech, USC, Mich, Mich St. PSU, but it will be rare.

The NCAA better be careful what they have wished for. They're gonna kill the golden goose. College football was unique among sport. Bowl games, conference championships, etc. Now basically nothing matters but the playoffs. It doesn't even matter if you win your division me anymore.

With soccer coming and fewer and fewer kids playing football, people are going to continue to lose interest.

Dude...You need help!

College Football has gained a whole lot more than it has lost...I'll agree that the system needs to do some things to make winning your conference a meaningful metric when deciding teams that make the playoffs...I would like to see Independent schools like Notre Dame be required to play a 13 game schedule to match conference champs that have to play a 13th game...

I don't want an affirmative action system that arbitrarily gives a Group of 5 School Access just to make them feel good.

While the Playoff system has been great for CFB, I don't want to to a NFL system where losing 3 or 4 games gives you the chance for access.

For God's sake don't allow fantasy football take of College Football like is has the NFL...people don't care about teams anymore..just the players!

As a Gamecock fan, this system has created a better chance for access to the playoffs. Teams can take on a quality non-conference opponent and it is essentially a Mulligan if you lose and still take advantage of your league.

Maybe Carolina Girl can give you a hug.

Honestly, you're looking at the past through extremely rosy glasses. The same system of haves and have-nots has always been with us. If anything, the current system provides more accountability in final rankings because the CFP committee provides a place to focus analysis. In the old days, it was just hundreds of voters and bowl forerunners who didn't give a damn about anything except their own closed door discussions. Now we at least have a measure of transparency. Not a huge amount, but the level of information floating about thanks to the internet is infinitely better than the era of occasional angry letters to the editor. I'd take the current state of affairs over that on 30,40, 50 years ago in a heartbeat

I don't think so.

Be happy for now, you are going to run roughshod over the East for a few years.

But at some point, Florida gets a real coach, then they'll rebuild in like two years or something (and you know it works that way at all 3 Big Florida schools).

Tennessee can probably do it too now, Middle Tennessee is putting out more talent every year. I'd put up a graph, but you know... graph.

But that isn't going to happen for South Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, or Vandy.

So if our grand strategy is depending on Florida or Georgia to hire bums as coaches, well...

TLDR

But reason I “bother” is because it’s my school.
And something that myself and my fellow friends who also graduated from usc can bond together with over the years.

Win or lose... we still will watch and have fun watching together

The system, as it exists now, has created so many bowl games that going to one has become meaningless. Consequently, if you're not in the playoff or a conference championship, it isn't a success.

I remember in 2000 feeling like we'd won the Super Bowl. After losing 21 straight the prior 2 seasons, we got to play Ohio State in Tampa on New Year's Day. Fast forward to last year, where the biggest headline out of us beating Michigan was Jim Harbaugh being on the hot seat.
