Regardless of everything else, it was awesome when the Ole Miss band cranked up Dixie with that little fanfare at the beginning.

Why isn't anybody going after UNLV to change their nickname, Runnin' Rebels?

Exactly. They were named that because of the confederates that hauled arse west after the war.

We're all ignorant of one thing or another, otherwise there would be no need for schools, dictionaries, the experience of life itself, well, you get my drift. Just so you know your premise of ignorance being a character flaw is flawed in itself.
So, if as you believe, ignorance is bliss, WILLFUL IGNORANCE must be Manna From Heaven.
You're probably feeling pretty damn good right now. ??

When comes to this particular topic it’s fixable ignorance.
Bruce Catton’s army of the Potomac (published 1951) is an excellent series that covers the war using primarily sources from a Union standpoint. You will quickly learn that neither sides army fought or really had an opinion on slavery. Using countless letters, dispatches, newspaper articles, and accounts from veterans of the war it will demonstrate a pre”revisionist” (accurate) account of causation behind the conflict(spoiler it was economic and political) for each side, motivation for troops on both sides, accounts of the war experience mainly from the northern point of view, and the politics driving the war( again mainly from the northern side)
Infact most pre revisionist sources (1980 at the latest) will clearly show that the north rioted (including race riots aimed a free blacks) when the draft occurred after the emancipation proclamation. And that the US foreign services were instructed by Lincoln to scrub any notion that the war was about slavery to the European powers.
But I digress.
So let’s try a different tact. Slavery was not a concept unique to the US, infact most European governments dealt with it domestically a via their colonies. Do you know the standard accepted method of ending slavery in European society? Reparations, to slave owners. That’s right, the government simply compensated the slave owner to help transition to a pay labor system. Do you know why that was never mentioned as a means to end slavery here? Because less than 2% north or south cared about slavery. A society looked into it and purchased land in Africa (Liberia) to reintroduce freed slaves into Africa after their purchase (Society for the Colonization of Free People of Color of America, later the American Colonization Society (ACS)) beginning in the 1820 had a grand design to end slavery the standard way and give each former slave group 40 acres and mule in Liberia. The plan fizzled out by the 1840s due to a lack of interest.
So no, the war was not fought over slavery. The Saint Andrews Cross (rebel flag) is a pretty standard flag of rebellion or resistance world wide. Not all slave states left the union and some none slave states supported the CSA. And I really do wish people would stop believing that history needs to have an agenda instead of accepting it and growing from it.
/rant.

It was 1st documented (that I can find) in a 1890s contest to give the university of Mississippi a nickname. You might note that by 1890 there were no slaves left and former slaves were not dwelling on their former condition. So that’s likely bullshite revisionist crap. Young Miss would denote a child but Miss or mistress would commonly denote the married females in white southern society in the south.
