Why can't part of the equation be Conference Champion

I watched a little of the commentary after the announcement last night and it seems to me that the committee doesn't even care if the teams win their conferences. How could you put someone in the Championship "mix" if they don't even win their respective conference? How do you guys see it?

Because the Big 10 and Big 12 conference champion might not even be a top 4 SEC team. This year, I don't even think FSU would be.

I think conference champions will carry a lot of weight. How exactly do you want the committee to show that now though when there are, you know, no conference champions in October?

Because the golden child, Notre Dame, refuses to join a conference.

As well as some conferences having a conference championship game and some not.

I feel like you are still melting from 1/9.

Disagree. First, two teams with same record and only one can go to title game. That's not fair in the system that has been developed, that many have begged for. Live with it. Secondly, conference winner is not necessarily good or deserving. FSU won the ACC with four losses one year, hardly deserving.

I'm not melting and I agree with the post that you can't take that into consideration (champion) at this early date but somewhere I heard discussion about that not being a deal-killer. What are the biggest point winners in terms of what makes up the ratings?

Teams they value beating teams they value.

conference championships should matter and will matter, wait and see.
The whole 3 SEC teams in top 4 is fool's gold. the SEC will most likely get one team in, the champ, and that's fine.
There is a small but real chance that a 2nd team may get a spot, but more often than not they wont.
Thats fine, everyone needs to stop worrying about backdooring their way in and just win the conference. if you're lucky enough to get in anyway, consider it a blessing, not an entitlement.

I think it needs to be the 5 major conference champions and three at large chosen by the committee. 8 team playoff... It only adds 1 game to the season that we have now.
I think that is where it will go eventually.
If you are for example the Big 10 conference the 4 team playoff is going to be a hard sell if it's conference champion doesn't get in the playoff. Just as the SEC would have a fit if the SEC champion is left out. I know that sounds dumb that the SEC champ would be left out but the current method of chosing the teams makes that a real possibility especially if the SEC Champ has 2 loses. If Florida State, Michigan State, Oregon, and TCU won out and the SEC Champ has 2 loses you can't tell me it won't be on the table.
To me that is a major flaw that must be corrected and can only be corrected with an 8 team playoff.

Mississippi State still has to play OM and Bama.
Bama still has State and Auburn and LSU.
Auburn still has OM and Bama.
OM still has State and OM.
It sucks that these great teams will get knocked out by playing these other great teams week in and week out while schools like Michigan State, FSU, Ohio State, Oregon, Oklahoma will most years have much easier schedules.

I'm here for a 21-0 melt.
Inbefore:
"Bama didn't even win the conference LET ALONE their division in 2011!"
Like adding the words LET ALONE after that statement every time the point is made enlightens thousands, nay, millions of minds.
It's like everyone all at once emulates a collective "AH HA!" when they realize the factuality of his statement, then must repeat it every chance they can with the exact same sentence structure.
Let alone heathens! Let alone!

Being a conference champion will help when it comes to discussions between 1 loss teams, but say you have a 1 loss SEC West runner up and a 2 loss B1G or Big 12 Champ, it is bullshite if the champ gets in for playing in a weaker conference.

I agree. I think, at the end, you will see a conference title carry a lot of weight.
The first poll conference standing meant nothing, but at the end I don't expect that to be the case.

Wait, there's been a conference championship already?

I am going to love watching the explanation the committee gives if Ole Miss and Alabama both win out and we get one team only.
The SEC could even end up with NO TEAM...let's say a two loss UGA team puts a second loss on Ole Miss in the SECCG. Alabama sits there at 11-1, having beaten Number 1 Mississippi State and Number 3 Auburn, not to mention going on the road and beating the team that beat number 4.
That will give Bama far and away the best strength of schedule...but no division or conference title. And they will stay home.
At the end of the season Bama could very well be number 1 on either the AP, Coaches Poll or both in this scenario, and we WILL claim it.
