Why are baseball fields not the same dimensions?

The bases are and the mound is universal but there are vast differences in the outfield fences? There aren't football stadiums with 105 yard fields or 92 yard fields, the goal post aren't more narrow at any specific stadium. Same with basketball. It seems like it would be part of participating in the league.

You'll probably get downvoted, but it's a fair question

It started because in the early years of baseball they shoved a stadium in an urban area and had to build those stadiums around local constraints.
Now it is just part of a tradition.

The game originated without home run fences.

Oh I know I'll get downvoted to an oblivion but it's a legit question. Are there standards or parameters you have to operate within? What's to keep coastal carolina from building a baseball field with a 500' fence and claiming the least homeruns ever given up in 10 years. Or could they build one that's 250' and every game just be an absolute scoring fest. I just don't get how that one sport you can just wing it. Both teams get to play on the same field so it's all fair I guess but its odd. missouri wouldn't be allowed to just put the football field on a slightly off level grade with one side always running up hill.

Technically there is supposed to be a ratio of wall distance to height, but I never understood what it was never enforced.
Then you see a team like Tenner building a ban-box like Yankee Stadium and with a little league right field.

Standardized basketball court dimensions are relatively modern. A lot of old high school gyms that were smaller than optimal had two backcourt lines, and were simply made to fit the available space. Football fields are also smaller than baseball fields, so, it's harder to fit a baseball field into an urban city block, which is typically where you found. Football, by contrast, generally developed on college campuses where space was not at a premium.

i played little league on a field without fences. a screaming ground ball to the outfield would be a ground rule double, same as a 200 ft bomb was.

Fair question, but I think it’s an interesting quirk for baseball.

Many stadiums were built to house more than just baseball.

I take it you didn’t play high school football in Alabama.

I guess it’s kinda like golf courses. Must have 18 holes but they can differ in length, obstacles, par of 70-71-72. Interesting part of the game.

Yep.
And some fields are like that here in Colorado.

I didn't. Played in Tennessee and I'm sure it's just as arse backwards but I don't remember running up hill. Memphis Melrose scoreboard didn't work 2x I played there and they were hosting the playoffs. So there's that.

Baseball fields, golf courses and race tracks (motor) are not cookie cutters.
Like someone said many MLB fields were squeezed in a neighborhood.

I get that. As much as tennessee gets shat on for having a small stadium they're still within like 10-20 ft of everyone. That's nothing. Remove a few rows of stands and add them where there's room. Noone is in danger of hitting a ball into the downtown traffic at any college baseball stadium I've ever watched.
