Doesn't mean Bama wasn't struggling. They had big ups AND downs. UT is on a big down right now. Won't argue that Bama didn't have it THIS bad though.

Let’s be honest though all the drama, infighting, coaching searches, etc. are a lot more fun than any other option outside of dominance.
If you asked me whether I’d rather be where we are right now which is pretty funny and entertaining or winning 8 games a year with David Cutcliffe or someone I’m taking chaos every time.
Not much worse than 8-4 seasons in college football and a trip to the Music City Bowl. So boring.
Bring me Bama level success or total chaos.

Tennessee has to recruit nationally to be relevant. Been that way since integration into football. Their decline has been overdue, like Nebraska's. One or two bad hires and it's a slippery slope down to grabbing 2-stars from other states instead of 4 and 5 stars.
Peytie Pie kept it from happening sooner. His commitment and Phat Phil's, um, recruiting prowess fueled some ridiculous classes in the 90s and led to the '98 title and '01 title... except Saban and LSU derailed that last one.
I think that started the slope. LSU doing it again in '07 SECCG proved to be their last relevant season.

Tennessee was much more talented in 2015 and 2016 than 2007. If Butch can recruit a team as good as that 2015 team then that tells me your theory is pretty shitty. The problem is how bad the head coaches have been.
They aren’t recruiting 2 or 3 stars they are still recruiting at a top 15-20ish level even though they have an irl gump retard as the HC.

Yeah. Joab Thomas was brilliant.

well that's ridiculous. No team, ever, has had the success Alabama has had since Saban arrived. Not even Alabama with Paul W. Bryant. There is a lot of winning football between this Alabama era (which of course will eventually end) and this Tennessee era.

Lol obviously an exaggeration but I would much rather have current level of dysfunction than 02-07 VOLS football.

The 2004 Peach Bowl against Clemson.
Their coach had complained about not being selected for a higher bowl that year and Clemson beat them bad.

It was kind of a weird space for me but I was hoping Pruitt would be a good one. Still may be. I know a lot of Alabama fans pull some Vol chains about Fulmer being a cancer, but I'm starting to believe it may actually be so.

Bowl games are meaningless exhibitions. How in that world would that game have had any real long term impact?

it was a joke homey.
similar to our joke that the Clemson bowl game with LSU a few years ago broke LSU.

Pruitt has absolutely no chance. We will collect 3 or 4 wins and have our bi annual coaching search and hope the next guy doesn’t suck as bad. Rinse and repeat.

they need to cut bait. After what appears to be a terrible hire I wouldnt give Phil another hire opportunity. I think he hired a coach he thought he could control beyond the norm of what an AD normally does. JMO it’s not like I keep up with the inner workings of TN football.

I'd like to think it is karma for what went down in Memphis all of those years ago. Fulmer got tired of losing to Bama on the recruiting trail, so he snitched on Logan Young - a prominent Alabama booster - who was paying players to come to Tuscaloosa to play football. This despite the fact that Roy Adams (aka "Tennstud"), a prominent Tennessee booster, was doing the exact same thing! These two men, among others, were locked in a bidding war for the services of Albert Means. Logan Young won the war and Tennessee snitched on him - despite the fact that Adams had also offered Means money to come to Knoxville.
Alabama is the only team to get hit with any type of sanctions, even though offering money to a recruit in and of itself is a major NCAA violation.

IMHO
1) Fulmer knifed Majors in the back to take control of the UT program (early 1990's)
2) Even though Fulmer had Tennessee riding high in the late 1990's, he still harbored a deep hatred for Alabama and because of this, he overstepped and overreached. The public at large did not realize it, but high school and college coaches did. These coaches learned that Fulmer could not be trusted, and started to steer their players elsewhere. Fulmer started to decline with UT, until he left.
3) Bad hires by Tennessee started, along with the coming of Coach Saban to Alabama.
4) Fulmer, somehow, someway (the bad hires?) got back control of the Tennessee program and refuses to admit he is not good for UT.
Tennessee will not ever be able to fix it until Fulmer leaves, and by then it maybe to late (think Minnesota)
By the way, Nebraska's porblems are due to them leaving the Big 12, and be able to recruit the state of Texas.

Fulmer. He was more interested in bringing down Bama than his own program and thought he could coast on that 98 ship.

Fat Phil sure hasn’t helped. I’m surprised they haven’t run that dude out of town.
He’s worse than Joe Alleva.
