A specific game?

Easy to blame kiffin, but it was already in decline when he got there

What SPECIFIC GAME or SPECIFIC EVENT marked the official beginning of the slide onto Darkness

The 2017 shutout that UGA put on them in knoxville as payback for their 2016 hail mary win in Athens. That's what finally broke them.

Phillip Fulmer. Until Tennessee fans realize this, they will be stuck in this same cycle.

The 01 SECCG. Their last great team went from playing in the Rose Bowl for a national title to...the Citrus Bowl.

F---u---l---m---e---r---'---s big bohonkus is involved. The Great Pumpkin has always been a controllaholic.

Kiffin left because of what he was seeing in the UT leadership, etc., and w---a---l---k---e---d right out.

It's amazing how close that team came to being 12-0.

This. Fulmer doesn't genuinely care if Tennessee is successful, as long as he has slimy tentacles all over the program.

Yep. Of course, I'd like to believe Karma for TennStud's and Fatlock's shenanigans is still playing a role in it as well.

I get alabama hating Fulmer, why exactly is it you hate him?

Dave Clawson and the Clawfense...

The only person in the SEC who could hold Arian Foster to 50 yards per game. Because of him, Fulmer lost his job...you know the rest...

A specific game? 2008 Wyoming.

The coaching changes prior to the 2008 season (losing Cutt, Matt Luke, Trooper Taylor) which set up the horrible 2008 season; highlighted by losing homecoming to Wyoming.

After that, well, it has been a revolving door as HC. No program stability will lead to these things.

The rise of Georgia and lsu has hurt Tennessee bad. In the 90’s that’s where they recruited most of there roster. The state of Tennessee simply does not produce enough talent.

This. Looking back, I think this game was the turning point for the program. On the verge of playing in another national title game a few years after winning it in 98, coming off the monster win against a GREAT UF squad, and the Vols shite the bed looking ahead. Sure, we were still "relevant" for a while after that, but we haven't been that close since.

Only caveat I would add is that if you look further back, I'm pretty sure someone, somewhere, made a deal with the devil prior to the Stoerner fumble that allowed that play to happen and for the Vols to go on to win the title. That SOB has damn sure been collecting his side of the bargain ever since.

Kiffin was offered the HC job at USC after they went 9-4 the season prior and 12-1 the year before that.

From the time that Fulmer decided that playing PI was more important than coaching his team, UT has gone from choking away the 2001 SEC Championship to being a flaming septic tank.

Moral of the story: mind your own business.
