So? You might have an argument had he managed to squeeze a SINGLE win in nhis first year. Thats not being hampered. Thats monumentally bad coaching.

I agree with you that he was a bad coach but he was also hampered by the fact that his assistants were not picked by him, they were mostly old and should have been retired. The players had little to no respect for them and therefore would straight up refuse to practice. Whitworth, being a below average coach, was also way too nice for his own good and just didn't know how to deal with that kind of impudence. He blamed the seniors for what was going on and benched the vast majority of them in response. Most of the players who played in 1955 were underclassmen with very limited experience. And, as a result of that as well as Whitworth's poor coaching skills, the team went 0-10.

I'm not saying the guy was a good coach caught in a bad situation. Whitworth was a bad coach. But I believe he came off looking worse due to the circumstances that surrounded him. I definitely would put him at #2 on my list of worst coaches in Alabama football history. I reserve #1 for Mike Dubose simply because of the after effects that resulted from his tenure.

After Whitworth left Bryant came in and took over the athletic department and kicked out all those responsible for the travesty of the last 5-6 years. As a result, the Whitworth years became a bad, but very brief period in our history. There were no outlying after effects. With Dubose, you had not only shitty seasons but you also had the Albert Means scandal. That is his legacy, that and him banging his secretary. The SEC championship was great, but can be easily forgotten after the shitfest of 2000.

I maybe wrong but I think I remember you saying that you have a connection with Dubose. If I'm wrong I'm sorry, if I'm right I'm sorrier still, but that man was a horrid coach. If he's not the #1 worst coach in the history of Alabama football he's definitely a solid #2.

I have the connection to Mike Dubose, but that doesn't mean I'm stating J.B. Whitworth is Alabama's worst coach because of it. In fact, I think Mike Dubose is third on that list.

yet were still voted a top 15 team. ties were not uncommon back then. a top 15 finish is NOT "destroying" a program.

But 4-5-2 the very next year is. The seeds were sewn in '53 though. Plus, he had had a losing season two years prior to '53. That SEC title from '53 is probably the weakest one any Southeastern Conference team can claim in football.

54-28-7 is a mediocre record as a head coach. Winning, yes. But mediocre.

Agree to disagree then. Whitworth was a horrid coach but I firmly believe Dubose was worse, despite his SEC championship. We as Alabama fans dish on Chizik as a mediocre coach despite having a national championship ring as a head coach...yet we seem to defend Mike Dubose for his season in 1999. I just find that hypocritical.

That's apples and oranges. Mike Dubose was mediocre too. But this is about being "worst coach".

From how some of your brethren talk, I always assumed the weakest SEC championship was 2004.

I still give it to Dubose. Yes, Whitworth only won 4 games but that didn't hurt us long term. I know Bryant had a lot to do with that but still...the after effects were minimal at best. Dubose set our program back 10 years. The 3-8 season in 2000, coupled with the Albert Means scandal that broke around the same time, was the worst 1-2 punch ever given to the Alabama football program. At least we recovered from Whitworth fairly quickly.

I can only go by my living history... don't want to address what happened before me.

So, in order from worst to first, my ranking of Auburn coaches:

1. Doug Barfield
2. The Mildly Retarded Bowden Child
3. Tommy Tuberville
4. Shug Jordan
5. Gene Chizik
6. Pat Dye

(P.S. I'm not counting interim-coach Brother Oliver from 1998.)

There are other things to being a coach besides recruiting. Those other things, Ed didn't have.

For Auburn its Doug Barfield. I was in school when he was there. Right after Shug and right before we got Pat Dye. The guy was awful.
