Ever since Saban, the game and team LSU fans get most worked about is Alabama. I don't think there's any question about that. Obviously it is not a traditional or longstanding rivalry. The Ole Miss rivalry is forced at this point. Used to be a thing but not a legit rivalry since I've been watching LSU football since the mid-90's. A&M is also a no. A&M may hate LSU but it's just another divisional game for LSU fans.
So in summation, and as most people already know because this thread emerges countless times every fricking year, LSU does not have a meaningful, reciprocal rivalry with any particular team in this day and age. The teams they compete directly against for meaningful accomplishments are the teams that draw the most attention. That's basically been Auburn, Bama, and Florida in my lifetime with Alabama easily being the most hated from 2007 onward.

quote:Whenever we go on a decent run, the rivalry actually gets a little intensity to it. The mid 90s through 2003, 2008-2009, and the Hugh Freeze era saw some pretty good times. I feel like Kiffin can get us back to that competitiveness
In terms of traditional rivalry, it’s Ole Miss.
However, most fans alive today (including myself) don’t remember the fervency of that rivalry.

All of the LSU fans that I know don't give two shits about A&M. There isn't enough history there. It can probably build over the next 20 years or so. But, they're an afterthought in comparison to Florida, Auburn and Bama.
Well that depends on your age, lots of older LSU fans have a little different view of Aggie. In 1978 and 1979, A&M signed the consensus #1 player in LA both years, Johnny Hector from New Iberia in 78 and Billy Cannon from Baton Rouge, yes the son of Billy Cannon Sr. From what I remember Billy Cannon Sr wanted Mac fired as early as 1976 and he told everyone that his son would not play for Mac, which of course happened.
I was at most of those 1970's LSU/A&M games.

I was at all of the games in the 80s and 90s and I'm glad we get the series back. But, for me, we were competing more in the 2000s and 2010s. So, the games with Auburn and Florida especially were the ones that I looked to every year and wanted to beat so bad. That was my early adult life and I suppose that shaped how I view things.

After LSU forced poor old Tulane to give up what was a fantastic inter-state rivalry, things have never been the same.
Tulane was and will likely remain LSU's only "true" rival. It was because it was, not because it had to be talked into existence or because it was particularly competitive. Alabama hasn't refused to play Vandy or Duke or Western Kentucky, etc...
And these teams are not even rivals of Alabama, as Tulane and LSU were and had been for decades before the termination of that series.

In the last 80 years, Tulane has beaten LSU 6 times. LSU has won 52 times. There are 3 ties. LSU has won the last 18 games dating back to 1983. It is not a rivalry.

Can you state definitively that Tulane vs. LSU was not a rivalry and was never considered that by anyone in Louisiana?
There is no reason to talk about win/loss ratio. It was fun for Tulane to try to beat LSU and LSU always enjoyed visiting NO and having the comforts of electricity, water, heat, indoor toilets and sEch for a day or so.

How much history do you need. We’ve been playing since the early 1900s (1890s?) and then fairly regularly since. Outside of the 00s when y’all quit the series, it’s been several games per decade.

I need it to mean something. The games in the 80s and 90s when we weren't very good and yall weren't in the SEC don't really move the needle. I see Arkansas as more of a rival when considering basketball and baseball as well.
Plus I was a teenager when those games happened. I barely remember anything other than the A&M band.

Can the board get a ROLL TIDE ROLL!! from you just one time? Would that be too very much to ask?

LSU doesn't have a true rivalry.
And I kind of like that.
We're too good to roll around in the mud with the bamas and aggys of the world.
