I’ll tell you what they did, they established a Brand and Identity too. For the example, the idea that the best basketball players go to Duke/Kentucky/Kansas/North Carolina.

Just for the sake of the argument, how could anyone not include UCLA in the "blue bloods" list for college basketball? I absolutely understand all four teams listed. But you simply cannot historically exclude UCLA. JMHO.

Ohio State has a losing record to Michigan, fewer wins than Michigan, and I believe fewer Big 10 and National Championships than Michigan.

Herein lies the rub ...

#1 Age matters - The farther back you have to go, the more watered down the 'Blue Blood" status becomes. Nobody doubts the early dominance of the Ivy League in CFB but who considers them blue bloods today?

#2 Head to head does not - Michigan could beat Ohio State every year since WWII but based on National Hardware nobody cares as Ohio State has more MNC's.

#3 All time wins can be biased - Utx, Michigan, and others were notorious for unfair advantages playing at their home as opposed to playing neutral or home and home. Vanderbilt is an anomaly in they played most of their games in Texas but have a winning record for the school in austin. Vanderbilt is 8-3-1 vs Utx but played 8 in Texas and only 4 in Tennessee. From 1905 to 2006 Michigan has only played Vanderbilt outside of Ann Arbor 3 times (1907, 1913, and 1922) which causes bias in favor of Michigan.

Blue Blood is a useless term. Most of it just means was good a long time ago. Being good now means more than 50 years ago and recruits mostly only care about the last 2 to 5 years.

I think that's a fair opinion to have. Easy to make the argument that UGA is a "tier 3" blue blood along with TN, LSU, AU, and FL.

Is Georgia global? Hell, are they national? I have never seen a person Georgia gear in Texas. Texas schools, LSU mostly.

UGA has been in the top 5 of college football mechandise sales the last 5 years or so. Top 10 before that. Can’t tell you if it’s national or global… or if UGA fans just have more dollars to spend than most.

I personally go off of all time wins in college football list bc that’s what the media uses. Whatever the top 8 are on there are blue bloods to me. If Georgia is on there, they are on there. If not, they’re not. You’re either a blood blue or regular like the rest of us.

Alabama
LSU
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee (dangerously close to losing that status)

These are the SEC blue bloods. Add OU and Texas once they join.

Age really begins to matter insofar as these teams are concerned when you consider that, when the Ivy League was blazing all these CFB trails, practically no one else was even playing college football. Maybe a tiny handful of state schools.

So from that standpoint you have to consider variety of competition as well.

Because Sam Gilbert was the biggest cheater in college basketball?

Because nobody cares about UCLA when they lose?

In college basketball the 4 blue bloods are
a) Kentucky
b) North Carolina
c) Kansas
d) Indiana

Dook is the Notre Dame of college basketball where their ratings are other schools teams watching and hoping to see a loss. They have no live fans and when UK lost prior to the Indianapolis Final Four the market collapsed as Duke could not carry the ticket sales. Butler kept that Final Four from total collapse. I have attended lots of Final Fours and that was the cheapest. Most expensive was in San Antonio for North Carolina and Kentucky

Honorable mention to Michigan State and LooserVille over UCLA and Took when it comes to actual fans at games.

Easiest answer for a modern blue blood is who leads sports center IF they lose. If they are played close it gives respect to the other program. They are also going to get the call more often then not. In order of today here’s your blue bloods:

1. Bama
2. Ohio State
3 Georgia
4. Clemson

That’s it. There’s 4.

OU at this moment is not viewed with awe. Their opponents don’t fear them, nor does a close loss bring the loser Credibility. Head coaches don’t voluntarily leave blue bloods. You should have paid Lincoln whatever he wanted.

Naw. Bluebloods can exist in the same area.

Duke/UNC for bball as an example.

Interesting metric.

Excluding Ivy's, the list of wins is as follows:

1 - Michigan - 982
2 - Alabama - 943
2 - OSU - 943
4 - Texas - 929
4 - ND - 929
4 - OU - 929
7 - PSU - 914
8 - Nebraska - 911

9 - USC - 857
9 - Tennessee - 857
11 - UGA - 854

So UGA won't hit the top 8 anytime soon... but has a chance to take sole possession of 9th this season. If UGA continues to be an 11+ win team and Nebraska continues to be a 7- win team... in a decade or so UGA could take the 8 spot.

Why isn't Yale on the list?

100 All Americans
28 inductees into the Hall of Fame
18 NCAA National Championships

They have more National Championships than anybody

Think about it.
