Mizzou has a strong case with Stull, Widenhoffer, and Powers from the late 70's to early 90's. The late 50's to the mid 70's was a very good era for Mizzou football with Dan Devine and Al Onofrio. Then that trifecta made Mizzou a bottom-feeder for 2.5 decades.

I thought Alabama made coaches successful?

Mike DuBose won a SEC Title and beat Steve Spurrier 2x in one season

Dennis Franchione finished in the Top 11 (would have won the West if not for probation)

Mike Shula finished in the Top 10

Bill Curry finished in the Top 10 (shared SEC Title)

I stand corrected...
Franchione won 10 games.

He was better than I remember.

I guess he just sucked at TAMU.

Won 10 games on the field 3 times during that span.

- '99 SEC Title
- '02 Won the West, not eligible to go to Atlanta
- '05

Not having Chris Samuels (Outland Trophy Winner) play vs Meechigan in the Orange Bowl cost us that game.

I still wouldn't say that Kiffin was a bad hire. If the USC job doesn't come open, he probably stays a few years and has some success.

Mike Dubose
Dennis Franchione
Mike Price
Mike Shula

I would say that Price was the worst, simply because Mal Moore failed to do his homework in regard to Price's drinking issues. I don't think it's rational to say that Shula was a bad hire, because under the circumstances he was the best candidate available at the time and did a pretty good job of getting the program from point A to point B, although he was never going to be a championship coach.

Franchione wasn't a bad coach at all...remember that after Alabama had gone 3-8 the year before, he came in and went 7-5 and 10-3. The only issue with him really is that he quit on the program late in the 2002 season.

Archer, Hallman, and Dinardo were certainly a run of terrible hires. Although, Archer was able to ride Arnsparger's talent for a few years, and Dinardo recruited well enough for a few decent seasons.

Right.

As bad as Archer was he pulled off a 1 loss season, dominant bowl win, and a top 5 finish.

Curley Hallman was dog shite. He dominates the worst single hire category.

DiNardo resurrected the program after Hallman left it for dead in a ditch. Got us back to winning, beat Clemson in bowl for a 10 win season, and stocked the program with quality players.

That 2001 SEC championship was littered with DiNardo players:

Rohan Davey
Josh Reed
Devery Henderson
Domanick Davis
Bradie James
Trev Faulk

To name a few.

But he did leave them in the lurch and it hurt them badly. It was so late, all the other hires had been made.

He accomplished nothing there really and his get the hell out of Dodge exit significantly impacted them in a very negative way.

But yet Alabama has enjoyed the 2 best coaches in the history of college FB!

Which negates any missteps along the way.

5 different coaches have won at least one national title at BAMA.

Thomas, Wade, Bryant, Stallings and Saban

Alabama should honestly take this over Tennessee for this alone. When your hire lasts 5 months and is fired for "off-field problems" (putting it delicately) before even welcoming the new recruits in July, that's full tilt turmoil

Except we never got to see how Price would've coached at Alabama. He happened to come along at the dawn of sports message boards. I wonder if it had been ten years earlier, if anyone would've even known about any of his indiscretions.

Tennessee and Arkansas are the latest ones that is for sure.

Just look at the last time either was relevant.

Tenner all day. Bama had a few coaches that dipped below bama standards and the program clearly bounced back....Tennessee has reduced itself to rubble..I've never seen anything like it and honestly, it's kinda mind blowing

message board weren't much of a thing in 2002. This site certainly didn't exist. Hell, my family had just gotten away from dial-up internet in 2002 Social media certainly wasn't around either, which really moves the needle far more than message boards do.

Regardless, he was busted using a university CC at a strip club. He wasn't fired because of the dawn of the internet.

Tennessee

Alabama was at least on probation during that time. Tennessee isn't even on probation.

Yeah but if you ask them Fulmer and Spurrier (though they'll say only Fulmer) killed them by answering the NCAA's questions about Means.

Bama's Admin and boosters did a lousy arse job before they finally gave Mal Moore the support and money needed to hire Saban. Our Admin and boosters have also done a lousy arse job and although I'm happier that Fulmer is there as a check that Haslam/booster battle is far from over.
