I'd argue that just about any coach can win 10 games at bama, given 4 years to do so. I certainly think each of Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt could have.

I would tend to disagree.

Aside from the current massive disparity that’s existed for a decade (which has had almost everything to do with coaching) I don’t see a TON of natural, innate program advantages that Alabama would have that Tennessee wouldn’t. Both have long, storied histories, big fanbases and stadiums, and great facilities. Neither Tennessee nor Alabama are exactly recruiting hotbeds. So I don’t see any of Dooley, Butch or Pruitt having significantly more success at Bama than they had (or are having) at UT. Possibly marginally better.

IOW, Saban (an all-time great coach) turned Bama from a great program into the country’s best program, while UT’s disastrous string of subpar coaches turned them from a very good program to a mediocre, underachieving program.

Mike Archer - when LSU could have had Spurrier until he would have left for Florida eventually
Hudson Curley Hallman
Gerry DiNardo (although he did bring back the magic if only temporarily)

With the talent in state of LA with virtually no other competition, no reason LSU should ever have a losing record during that time.

He coached a team that lost to a horrid OSU team in John Cooper’s first year

Does anyone think Dooley might get another shot as a head coach somewhere - offense at Mizzou with Kelly Bryant has been very productive and maybe he's learned his lessons similar to O

Honestly it wouldn’t surprise me if Dooley got another crack at it. If he shows some consistency for a long enough period and gets results, he will get phone calls. Maybe not an elite program right away, but down the road.

light years different from what we see today and had zilch to do with why Price was fired, which was the whole point of this discussion.

I'm not talking about the difference between today and 2002, I'm talking about the difference between 2002 and 1992. It was more drastic between '92 and '02 than it's been since '02 to '19. All I'm saying is that there was a LOT of message board chatter about Price back then, crazy e-mails going back and forth, and just all-around bad press that would've been literally IMPOSSIBLE in '92.

Maybe it had something to do with it, maybe it didn't. But I remember rumors about Curley Hallman back in the early 90s that would be wildfire if even the boards of 2002 existed back then. As it was, no one really talked about it much - as opposed to what I saw regarding Price.

Was it easier to hide shite in 02 than it is today? Without a doubt. But, it doesn't hold a candle to the difference between '92 and '02. In '92 you could still hush shite up that you couldn't in '02.

He'll get phone calls at the end of this season. If not a CFB HC job the NFL will be looking for OC's. Not much of an end game for em at Mizzou.

Dubose was a terrible hire. No question about it. And I realized while typing this that my phone wants to autocorrect his last name to “subpar.” That really says all there is to be said.

I thought Franchione was a great hire at the time. I loved watching his triple option offense decimate teams, for the short time I got to witness it. I don’t know that he would have won any championships here if he had stayed, but he definitely would have won some games.

For everyone on this board who says, “Mike Leach is a genius! He throws the ball all over the field. Look at what he’s doing at Washington State!”, Mike Price was Mike Leach before Mike Leach was Mike Leach. I didn’t like the hire as I thought his philosophy would not fit well at Alabama, but it was understandable why he would at least be considered.

Shula was simply the best we could get given the situation.

Only at Alabama could Mike Dubose have won an SEC championship, not to mention in the very same year he lost to La Tech...

And the only coach to beat Spurrier twice in one year, ever.

Biggest problem with lsu was the reluctancy to fire curly after the 2nd season and miles when he refuse to make changes in whatever year you choose.

To date, Hallman is the only LSU coach since the formation of the SEC to have never tallied a winning record or coached in a bowl game.
